Q:scorched my carpeting. the lamp cord had a split and it broke leaving black scorch marks on my carpet.: First be thankful this damaged lamp cord did not start a fire! Then take some small shears and cut the pile that is damaged. If the damage is too big and cutting the pile would leave a bear spot, see if you have an extra piece of the carpet (can take it from a closet) and do a carpet patch. If properly done they are almost invisible.

Q:whats a good inexpensive stream cleaner that will make my carpet look like new again! we moved into our apartment almost a year ago and it was a very rainy muddy day, ever since my carpets have just been plain nasty looking, its only the livingroom and diningroom though. What can i get that will actually work: I decided last year to do that very thing and researched carpet steamers and scrubbers on Consumer reports. Their finding was that NO home carpet cleaner was even close to the cleaning power of the rental steam cleaners that can be rented at grocery and pharmacies. (They did advise to inspect closely for worn or dirty units). But beyond that - they said that having Stanley Steemer out was far beyond the cleaning of the rentals. That's what I did, and I have to agree, having used both rental steamers and an older home carpet scrubber at our own home and on rental property carpets.

Q:My roommate spilled fruit punch on our carpet a month ago. Any idea how to get it out?: If it is strictly juice: pat the area with a clean damp rag with household ammonia 25% Hot Watter 75%. The rag you are using should rerung in the ammonia solution every few pats. Depending upon how much sunk into the carpet, you may soak the area and press real hard to get the liquid back out of the carpet backing and possibly even the padding. Once most of the liquid is removed then switch to a solution of OxyClean and very hot water. The stain needs to be soaked in the OxyClean solution for at least 10 minutes. Getting that liquid back up will require some kind of suction device like a shopvac. If it is a drink like Hawaiian punch: Skip the ammonia step and go straight for the OxyClean step above. Make sure the watter is as hot as possible. I boil mine then add the OxyClean, watch out it will foam up very fast when added to hot water. I use the cheap stuff from the dollar store, but the real stuff does dissolve better. The older the carpet the less likely you will be able to get the stain out. This is because the carpet fibers have been worn down and allow easier penetration of stains. If it was a large amount of liquid you may need a rug shampooer or shopvac to get up all of the liquid. The idea is to soak the area then remove the liquid, with the stain hopefully. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO GET ALL OF THE LIQUID OUT!!! THIS MAY BE VERY DEEP INTO THE PADDING. If you don't get out all of the liquid the stain may look gone when finished, but will mysteriously return weeks later after walking on that area. Also leaving a carpet damp may lead to mold problems. With the stain remaining in the carpet for a month to dry, the possibility of cutting a remnant from one area of the carpet and having it placed in the spotted area might be your only solution. Obviously this is done by a professional and will depend upon if you have an area of carpet that can replace the now stained area. QueryAll on the Internet

I tried flipping it the other way for a few days but it was still there. any tips?: Lay the rug flat on the floor and put heavy books on top of the creased part. Leave the books on the rug for at least 5 days. The books will smash the wrinkle out. You might want to put the rug in a spot where it won't be in the way. :) -

Q:I got a flat woven rug and it keeps getting caught in my door. It drives me nuts. I just want to cut an arc out of it for my door. Is there a way to go about that?: Probably hard to do if you're talking about an area rug. Scissors don't usually cut through rugs very well, even very good scissors. A utility knife doesn't do it very well either. And whatever you cut it with, the cut edges are going to fray. Better to move that rug back a bit and get something flatter for just inside the door.

Q:I recently moved in with my boyfriend but I told him I'd only move in if he put a carpet down because we have a 10 month old son who does not want to sit still. It's been a couple months and everytime I bring it up he dismisses it. I don't want to wait any longer. I will pay for it and he already said he knows how to put it down. The floor is completely bare...it's not hard wood flooring but the wood that's underneath the carpet it comes with. It has staples to hold down the wood and all along the edges are those sharp nail things. He said that we need something additional to put between the wood floor and the carpet that makes the carpet soft or something. These products also contain a mild cleanser that can help remove discoloration. Alternatively, you can use borax powder or baking soda, but they are less effective in eliminating stubborn odors. Step 5 Let sit for 8 hours. Step 6 Vacuum the treated areas. Let sit for 24 hours. Step 7 If odor remains after you have treated the carpet with an enzyme odor neutralizer, repeat the treatment as needed to eliminate lingering odors. Step 8 Understand that in severe cases where the soiling has occurred for an extended period of time, you may need to replace the carpet padding. Good Luck!
