- Q: How do you clean an EGR valve on a 1999 Ford Taurus DOHC? What do I do and what can I use? Will water work? I've read a lot about a plunger mechanism but I have no idea what this is. Please explain in the best detail you can how to remove, clean, and re install the EGR valve?
- You will have to use an appropriate size ratchet wrench set. The valve is held in place by 2 bolts, usually. It is round and flat, and has a diaphragm inside the metal cannister. Once you have removed it, invert it. It will be full of unburned carbon which is easily removed with spray Gum-out and a small brush. If you are unlucky, and the internal diaphragm has broken, you will need to replace the valve. This is pretty rare, though. EGR stand for exhaust gas recirculation. This is what the thingy does. Under acceleration, vacuum from the engine causes the valve to open and scavange exhaust gas from the attaching pipe. Usually, and I should not write this, I just plug the vacuum on these things to prevent them from opening at all. Then I install a set of Bosch Platinum, Fusion or nippondenso Twin Tip plugs. This will reduce pollution, anyway, which is the goal of having an EGR valve. WHen it is diconnected, no carbon will get sucked back into the intake system, and the engine will stay cleaner inside. If you are smart, you will begin using Mobil One 0W-30 oil. This will improve your gas mileage, keep the inside of your engine cleaner, and you will only need to change it once every year or so. This oil will help prevent the formation of unwanted sludge and carbon deposits. You will be amazed at how much gasoline you end up saving!!!
- Q: Okay so my boyfriend's father is getting a heart valve replacement....he's so nervous he cried last night when he heard it will be in 2 weeks....and he's usually one of those tough guys has anyone or know anyone who has had this type of surgery. They are leaning towards a animal (cow or pig) valve...because with mechanical you have to take blood thinners for the rest of your life...anyways if anyone knows information on this or knows the pro's and cons of the two diff. types of valves please give me info. Thanks
- Hey, Firstly, to answer your question, I quote from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons: ...there is little if any difference between valves. The principle advantage of mechanical valves is their excellent durability. From a practical standpoint, they do not wear out. The principle disadvantage is that there is a tendency for blood to clot on all mechanical valves. Therefore patients with artificial valves must take anticoagulants or blood thinners for the rest of their life. bovine or porcine valves have ...a reduced risk of blood clots forming but all are less durable than mechanical valves. Given enough time, they will probably all wear out. The options in this category include xenograft valves made from animal tissues (most often pig aortic valves), homograft or allograft valves retrieved from human cadavers, and pulmonary autograft valves moved from the patient's pulmonary artery on the right side of the heart to the aortic position on the left. The decision on the type of valve used should be made in conjunction with your cardiothoracic surgeon and your cardiologist. Ultimately the choice will depend on a patient's preferences, lifestyle, and individual risks as determined by age and other medical conditions. The risk for this kind of surgery is really high and depending on the individual the outcomes may vary. What I think your boyfriend's father needs now is reassurance from you guys, it must be really hard for him to have to expose his vurnerable side since he's always been the tough guy around. And look online for informations: www.nlm.nih /medlineplus/tutorials/heartvalvereplacement/htm/index.htm Medline is one of the most reliable database, I'd say you can read up the surgery there.
- Q: My mom just went to DR and will have open heart next Thursday for removal of anyerisum. She was told she has 2 heart valves instead of four. What does this mean? Is it normal?
- Your mom probably has a Bicuspid aortic valve, that she was born with.. it means that the valve between her heart and the aorta has two valve leaflets instead of the usual three valve leaflets (not four) in normal people. Bicuspid aortic valve is caused by fusion of two of the three leaflets. It's a fairly common congenital condition, and is associated with a risk of aortic aneurysm (a weakening of the wall of the blood vessel which then causes ballooning of the vessel wall)...usually of the ascending aorta. All the best for her safe recovery.
- Q: Does the new valve get glued or anything or do I just put it on tightly? I cannot tell if the existing valve is glued on or not.
- Is the new valve or the old valve the compression type? If the old valve is then as you take it off you will discover if it is glued (I doubt a compression valve is also glued). Replace the old valve with the same type as the old one. That is always a good rule of thumb to follow. Put it on tightly but DO NOT over-tighten it. 1/4 turn past tight it usually tight enough. I am not a big fan of compression fittings in either copper or cpvc. You may wish to put a glued valve on, if you already have the cleaner, the primer, and the glue, other wise the expense of the materials does not warrant their purchase for the changing of one valve.
- Q: the ac replacement valve seems to be leaking i was wondering what is the average cost of having it replaced..
- The valve itself is only a couple dollars. Some shops have a tool that will let them replace a valve without dumping the charge but since its likely low you will likely also have to pay the regular AC service fee which is usually $50-100 plus parts and refrigerant.
- Q: Is there something else i can use to lubricate my trumpet valves besides valve oil....I don't have any at the moment but really need to lubricate the valves.
- Honestly, vaseline will screw up your valves over long uses as the viscosity of the material will make your valves stick harder. Baby oil has minerals in it that will eventually build up on the valves and start corroding it. The best lubricant you can use is saliva because it will not create build up. It is cheap and effective but not recommendable. I remember my valves were stuck right before a show, but I spit on them and they worked fine. Its a short term solution, but go out and buy some valve oil.
- Q: I have a Ford Explorer 4x4 2004 model. The check engine light soon has been on for two to three weeks, I finally got it checked and they said i need my ERG valve cleaned. They quoted it for around 50 bucks, which is fine. However, i dont get paid until a week from now. Will it be alright until then? What are the effects of a dirty/faulty ERG valve if not taken care of??There are not sputtering or anything abnormal that i can tell..Thanks.
- It will be ok to drive. It recirculates exhaust gases to help reduce emissions.Typical signs of a malfunctioning egr valve are hesitation during acceleration, rough idling, and hard starting. These can also be signs of a bad evp sensor too, which is the electrical sensor that attaches to the egr valve. The egr valve is easy to clean if you wanna do it yourself and save some cash.Remove it from its mounted location, use carb cleaner to spray inside the valve to remove the carbon buildup. You should push the pintle valve in and out so you can get cleaner to the inside passages.Be careful because you don#x27;t wanna accidentally get cleaner on the diaphragm of the valve. You can also use a small wire brush or even an old toothbrush to scrape away crusty carbon buildup.Replace the gasket if it tears during removal because a torn gasket will cause a vacuum leak. You can drive the car until you get it cleaned though, without being worried that its gonna tear something up.
- Q: So outside we have a gas grill. There is a valve to turn when you want to use it. U can only hear the gas going when u turn the burner knobs but say u left the valve open and no knobs turned at all for 5 hours is gas escaping or does it only escape when the grills knobs are turned? Thanks
- To answer your question directly, as long as the valve is open gas will continue to flow until its turned to the off position.
- Q: so i'm replacing a one hole faucet, and i'm stuck at the very first step. the cold water valve turned off with no problems. i tried to turn on the cold water and none came out. unfortunately, the hot water valve just squeaks and goes around and around, never cutting off the water. when i turn it, it also leaks a minute amount of water, though regardless of which way i twist, it stops as soon as i do. i can't just unplug the hot water valve with it still running water, so does anyone have any ideas? how does one replace a valve like this to begin with? is it possible that there is a shut off valve for the house that i myself can access (without having to call someone to shut off my water)? in case you haven't noticed, i am a bit plumbing deficient, so if you could explain it without too much jargon, it would be much appreciated.
- There has to be a main shutoff in the house, whether you are hooked up to city water or have a pump. And no, when you shut off the main valve and the pressure drops very little more water will escape the water heater. If the water heater has a shut off valve on the hot water line coming out of it, even better. Shut one or the other/or both off and drain the pressure via the sink faucet. The only water you will get when you take the problem valve off will simply what is in the lines. You can then change the valve and faucet. It's always prudent to shut off the power, or flame if the the water heater is gas, in case there is a bit of syphoning.
- Q: what is meant by inherent characteristic for the steam control valve??
- There are different type of valves, (ball, gate, globe, needle, diaphram) each have their own characteristics in how they operate and the effect they have on flow. Inherent characteristic would be an effect that valve has on the fluid flowing through it.(steam can also be considered a fluid ) An example is a globe valve used to throttle a flow does so by adjusting the size of its opening. In essense its a variable orifice. Flow through an orifice results in a pressure drop across that orifice. So, an inherent characteristic of a globe valve is a pressure drop.
