Q: The application is a bathroom light and exhaust fan combination. The fixtures wires are thiner than the supply wires. Should I wrap the thinner wire around the thicker wire or should I wrap them equally around each other? Then can I put a drop of solder on before I put the wire nut. Or is solder not a good idea?: If the supply wires are solid and the fixture wires are stranded put the stranded wire slightly past the end of the solid, say 1/16. Then put a yellow wire nut on them. Tug on the stranded wire to be sure it caught. If the wires are both solid, try twisting the larger wire around the smaller one. It is tricky but if you let your lineman's pliers slip a little as you twist it should work. Cut back to about 1/2 to 5/8 and install the yellow wire nut. Time was wires were soldered together, but properly installed wire nuts are just fine.

And the black are nuetral???: If as you say white are (hot) .This situation it's called reverse wiring and has violation .In the main control box check the weirs if white is connect to the neutral terminal (a plate with lot of screws) and black is exit from breakers ,your wiring is correct and may one place in circuit branch by mistake neutral is connect to the hot and hot to neutral (ammature work).

Q: what does a #12 copper wire look like and waht does a #14 wire look like if you got pictures post a link thanks: actually a few years ago they color coded the casings of the wiring so that the 12 gauge is yellow and the 14 gauge is white. The difference is the size of the wire. Bigger the number the smaller the wire and the less of a load in should carry

Q: I'm not sure what kind of wire to use to make wire rings. I had found 50ft of thin wire for a cheap price from city mill. Is there a difference between wire from city mill and wire from Walmart or Ben Franklin? I went to Walmart yesterday and the wire was expensive for such a short length. Q: I recently purchased a 1-wire alternator and I'm not sure what to do with the wire harness that was on my stock alternator. Also not sure what the three wires on it go to. Can anyone experienced in alternator wiring tell me what these wires do and if it is ok to leave them unhooked?: Connect the existing larger wire to the stud with the 7/16 nut.That goes straight to the battery+. Use a test light to find the smaller wire that goes hot with the ignition on.That goes to the terminal marked f or field.That turns the alternator on and off so it doesn't drain the battery when the engine is off.
