Q: I had a stucco like substance on my bathroom ceiling that was peeling and falling off. I scraped it all off and found a layer of pink paint beneath the stucco that also was peeling in many spots. Underneat the paint is plaster that has some spots. I have an exhaust ceiling fan in the bathroom but don't think it works terribly well. I am considering scraping the remaining paint off then filling in uneven spots and corners with spackling compound then painting over the whole thing again but I am concerned that the spackle will not adhere well in the spotted areas. Does anyone have any recommendations?
The drywall should be replaced. Use a good quality primer / sealer. Mold / Mildew doesn't just go away. It permiates the drywall.
Q: This is an old house and has wood and some type of dry cement-type material in between the wood slats. I stepped on the ceiling while doing an insulation job in the attic. The wood is fine but the dryed material cracked and separated from the wood slats in the bathroom. The damages area is around 18 inches by 12 inches, and some cracks in other areas of the ceiling. I do not want to sheetrock the whole bathroom if i can avaoid it (too many projects in this ol house). thanks!
I would say go up to the attic where you made the initial damage. Where the damage was made, go to the opposite side of the wood, and use a box cutter to cut through, should cut enough to see it in the bathroom. Do this on each side of the wood beam, opposite side of the damage. Then go down to the restroom, finish cutting through, ( make sure no wires, pipes, etc are not in way) Cut along beams, then across to other beam, making a square or rectangle. Try not to break up the cut out piece. Keep it and get the exact measurement off another sheet rock slab. Cut the new sheetrock and secure it to the wood beams. Should be exact fit, don't worry if not perfect. From there, get some joint compound and fill it in nicely. Sand down after dry if needed...If not same thickness just add more compound to match it up.
Q: the fabric lining my jeep's ceiling is missing in the front of my car. came down in bits and pieces and i wasn't able to reattach it. there's a material underneath that looks something like yellow fiberglass??? is that right? is it safe to be exposed to this? i don't use the car much so i haven't had it fixed yet but i'd like to know what i'm dealing with here. thanks for any help!
Use spray adhesive to stick it back in place.
Q: I have removed textured wall paper from ceiling, the plasterboard is in very good nick, but has gaps between sheets?I really dont want to have to get it all re-skimmed.would the correct approach be to plasterboard joint tape, then lining paper over over it, before painting?Id appreciate a how to.....
when you say plasterboard if your talking about sheetrock than yes, youll be ok...if its plaster then you best bet would be to put a fresh layer of 1/4 sheetrock over it and have a nice new flat ceiling that wont crack up on you.
Q: We are rennovating my basement. There was a drop ceiling and thin paneling on the walls. I took out the drop ceiling and the paneling. The main goal is to get an efficient way to heat the space. The house has radiator heating so I figured we could use the heat from the pipes as the main heating source. We will put in a new drop ceiling that stays above the pipes (exposing the pipes will heat the space). What kind of insulation is recommended for the new drop ceiling to keep the heat in? I was recommended either fiberglass or foam insulation. The framing on the walls is good and I would like to reuse. What type of insulation on the walls? We will be drywalling them. Once again, I was recommended fiberglass but to put a plastic barrier between the wall and insulation. What do you think?I am open to any suggestions. Thanks!
For the walls use fiberglass kraft faced(paper on one side) and no plastic or unfaced insulation with plastic. R-11 or R-13 for 2x4 walls. For the ceiling, I wouldn't bother with it. Instead add a radiator to the basement area and add a new pump and thermostat to create a new zone. Otherwise the basement would only be heated when some other area of the house needs more heat, this usually makes the basement too cold or too hot.
Q: Our basement bedroom does not have insulation in ceiling between joists but it is possible to insulate from another area that is not finished but I would have to use the insulation which is blown in between the joists. Is this a good insulation and is it practical to do for noise reduction? Otherwise, we would have to tear out the ceiling in the bedroom and use the fiberglass insulation. Do you have any other ideas or suggestions for noise reduction? This is a new home.
You wouldn't be able to poke in Fiberglass that's for sure. Also it doesn't absorb that much sound anyway. Blown in wouldn't help that much either (after a couple of years it settles anyway). You appear to be looking for sound proofing. There are many different kinds of ceiling tile out there and you should check out as to which works best and include wall material too as just the ceiling alone may not do the job well enough plus you would need to do the door too. (There isn't much you can do about the windows unless you block them). Best of all check out a building materials store or someone who has done something similar. Good luck!
Q: I had the roof replaced last summer, but havent had the energy to get up there and take down the ceiling tiles and the fiberglass insulation. I started removing it a section at a time a week ago, and wow! What a mess!. Gravel is falling down on my head and the insulation and tiles are dry now, but its still hard to pull them out. Should I be wearing a mask? Is there anything in the old dried out insulation and ceiling tiles that I should cover my nose? Its making a really big mess, so any suggestions will be helpful.
You should absolutely weat a mask! There's fiberglass in there you said and you don't want that in your lungs along with all the dust and dirt. Fiberglass never disolves and it is made from glass.
Q: What is the use of sisal?
Sisal (sisal) is a common agave plant, is also a kind of perennial, fleshy, xerophytic herbs, mainly from the leaf sheath to obtain fiber. Sesame is a perennial leaf fiber crop, is also the world's largest amount, the widest range of a hard fiber. As the characteristics of hard fiber with a white, tough texture (tensile strength), flexible, resistant to sea water immersion, friction, not broken broken, and less glue, not easy to slip and other characteristics, so yellow, kenaf and other bast fibers Can not be replaced.
Q: The kitchen of the flue was decorated to open a great! How to seal this mouth? What materials?
Smoke mouth processing methods: 1, the use of public flues, must be equipped with a smoke check valve, or you will regret later, the smoke comes with the check valve, the effect is not good, no matter how much the brand are the same. A separate pipe out of the wall, their own row, you can not consider. 2, the kitchen flue mouth and the connection of the pipe, must be sealed and handled, or no matter how good the smoke check valve can not completely block the taste of others cooking at home. Hobbies other people to cook the fragrance of the students except. 3, the kitchen flue mouth opening position must be high, for the smoke pipe into the ceiling, in order to save valuable space hanging cabinet.
Q: Sorry for shouting,,lol,,,want to replace 40 year old fibrglass insulation in basement ceiling with new, joist are 16 inches apart and 2x8 sized,,,what size insulation should i use
=== maybe you use the basement a bunch or not so much SO, you do need to insulate that ceiling to make it energy efficient the higher the R-factor the better the savings and the warmer that it will be above the basement ceiling ..... buy the stapler tacke
