- Q: The tile guy that I am using has never worked with stone, so I am worried. Can you please give me some insight on some things I should know about using stone (slate) for wall tile in a shower/bath.
- You would use cement grout. If its in your house, i would consider then laquering it to make it nice and shiny and stop water sitting in cracks and creating mould.
- Q: Hi, I have an outside breezeway that connects from my house to my garage with a roof and cement slab. I'm in the process of closing it in and making it part of my house(fully heated). I'm going to tile the floor but I'm not going to have a sub floor to insulate under it, I worry about moisture, cold floor and cracking of tiles (I live in Michigan).So my question is I'm not sure on how to go about this, I was thinking a 1/4 to 3/8 insulation rolled on the slab, then cement board and then thermostat controlled heating mat then tile, What do you think, thanks.
- All of that is not necessary if the cement is not cracking from moisture. If it is, then I say go for it, at least you will have warm feet.
- Q: I'm removing a tile floor and planning to install a hardwood floor instead. I found cement backer board under the tile. Do I need to remove the cement backer board? Or can I install the hardwood on top of that?
- if it was my house i would remove cement board and replace with wood to accept nails, if it is a floating floor you can keep it, just put tar paper doon before floating floor

- Custom Building products, sold at Home Depot is what I ve used for years.. You can use the white or grey, just that the grey is just a bit cheaper too. For porcelains you ll want the Flexbond line in the Custom thin set. It s the one recommended for porcelains. Also in the past I ve used H B Fuller s Tec lines of thin sets. love that line, it mixes to a nice creamy consistancy. But its not as available to the public and more expensive. - Q: I can ollie on the grass fine.I can ollie high and easy.But when i do it on cement i ollie high but when i pop it my right foot that on the tail slips off.So why does it do that.Can you tell me what going wrong.Help me.My foot always comes off :(
- it is because your rolling. you gotta stay over your board when you pop.keep your board under you kinda.it probably kinda weird at first going from grass to cement but keep trying or i will kick your face off.
- Q: thinking of using Wedi Board to renovate a shower, this product is great for tile but saw a show room shower that used scratch coat cement, how hard is this to do compared to tiling?
- If you mean instead of tile, remember that unless you plan to paint it - concrete or cement is not waterproof. Think of a concrete pool - it requires periodic painting (maintenance). There are a lot of thin solid surface products out there if you do not want to look of tile. Tiling is not that hard as long as you prepare properly and take your time. There are alot of site with tiling guidelines out there - the important thing is to install/prepare the surface properly and seal the grout when you are done.

- Are you saying hardwood and not the ply wood sub floor? You can t go over hard wood with tile, even with a backer board.There is to much movement and expansion and contraction . Must remove this too. Now if you mean sub floor then yes it s very important that you do cement board ( 1/2) you need this total thickness in substrate to meet tile codes 1 1/4 minimum.This must be layed properly in a bed a thin set and nail well.
