As for cleaning, my best advice is take it to a reputable cleaner, tell them what it is made from (type of yarn, etc), and ask if they can clean it with no damage. If you want to try washing it at home, use a good rug upholstery cleaner diluted with water in a bucket, then clean the rug by working a foam with a sponge, then using the foam gently rub into the material. Then dry by gently rubbing with terry cloth (towel). I would test a piece of yarn to make sure it's colorfast, first.

- Put the rug in the wash machine with enough hot water to cover it...add two scoops of Oxy Clean..let the machine agitate for a bit to mix it all up and then turn the wash machine off..close the lid and let it sit over night or longer. Then add detergent and continue the wash cycle. It should take the stain out..it works on vintage linens with set in stains and brings them back to white again. Although...even though the smell is gone, hopefully the scent is gone for her, so to be sure...after you remove the stain..soak it again but with white vinegar, this is the only natural substance that will remove pet odors...then...rinse and rewash with detergent again. Yeah it's a process..but if this is a prized rug, it would be worth it. If it's just a basic rug you can easily replace, then toss the rug and buy another one.

I am willing to try just about anything short of a beach based cleaner? The carpet is an off white, so it's extremely noticable. Any suggestions, or is this a hopeless case?

- Yes, you need to have the carpet to carpet non-skid. It should be pretty cheap. You could use duct tape, and it could very well keep the rug in place. that's basically what carpet to carpet padding is. It's very sticky on both sides. If you ever have problems removing the tape residue, try just a tiny, tiny bit of AFTA which is a solvent.
