Q: A thin wire connected to a light bulb will have the bulb shine dimmer than a thicker wire. What is the scientific reasoning for this?
Thin wires are usually used to make heat because there is more resistance going through a thin wire. In an incandesent bulb 60% OF THE OUTPUT IS HEAT. If thee is thicker wire, more electrons go through and the light can be brighter.
Q: I bought a single pole dimmer switch to install in my dining room and when I took the old switch out nothing looked right. There are two wires which were joined together by another single wire which was attached to the top screw. There was another single wire (I believe the ground wire) attached to the bottom screw. I disconnected the first two wires and attached them separately to the black wires on the dimmer and attached the ground wires together. It didn't work. I've tired several different times with no luck. I put the wires back the way they were and attached them to the old switch and they no longer work ether. Help! How can I fix this problem? The old wires appear to be a very thick copper covered in black plastic and cloth.....
The 'answerer' Justin K thinks you have knob and tube wiring. A lot of early electrical installations were done in the old days with out a ground, many types of early 'romex' did not include a ground. You may or may not have 'knob and tube' wiring - but it really dose not matter. The two wires which were joined together and had a third wire attached are the hot wires. The other wire (lower screw terminal) is the 'load' wire - it goes out to your light fixture. The reason the those 2 wires were attached together is that one of them is hot, and the other wire is a 'feed' to supply power to your next switch or receptacle. I am an electrical contractor, this is how I would fix the problem - I'm not suggesting that you do it though. #1 turn the breaker/fuse back on. #2 use a voltage tester to determine which wire is now hot. #3 touch the hot wire to the other wires 1 at a time. The hot wire when it is touching the 'load' wire will turn on the lighting fixture. Mark the 'load' wire with some black electrical tape. #4 turn the power back off #5 attach the marked 'load' wire to one of the switch terminals. #6 take the other 2 wires (incoming power, and the out going power) and join them together with a third wire ---LIKE IT WAS ORIGINALLY. Place that third onto the other terminal of the switch. it dose not mater which terminals you use - it will work just fine.
Q: Wire diagram
Hello there George, It has become common over the past few years that non-residential boilers are wired with EPO (emergency, power off) switches just outside each door to the boiler room. This is similar to having fire alarm pull boxes by the exits. I do not know of any jurisdiction that requires it for a residence. On occassion I've seen the 24 volt circuit for the thermostat being switched, which is a bit sketchy. Normally the 120 volt circuit for the controller is switched. The switches used are of the pushbutton type.
Q: Need wiring diagram or manual

Q: I dont' know if quot;a wiremeans phone call, or whatever the original sentene from the story is as follows:quot;Because I had a wire from Hilton Cubittthis morning.quot;
That's from the day of telegraph messages; it was the urgent medium.
Q: While updating the parents basement we needed to replace a very very old 3 way switch. However, the wiring to the Fluorescents seems extreme to me. Here is how i can describle the layout. Panel - junction box - double splice (one to light fixture and one to threeway switch below it)-. From that threeway switch 12-3 wiring to upstairs landing with other threeway switch resides. How should I make my connections to switches? If the other swtiches were not so old I would just copy them.
This article will describe it better than I could, and it has pictures! ... It sounds like your situation is the same as the second method. Bert
Q: My light switch has three sets of three wires (like conduit).. there are three black wires, three white wires, and three bare wires.. and I don't know how to hook up another light switch because it's near impossible to get three wires around a screw terminal. My boyfriend (works in maintenance) hooked a light switch up (one that you put the wires in a hole and then screw) except for the bare wire where two wires are under the screw terminal and the third is wrapped around the other two bare wires. The lights will stay on but when you turn the switch off, it kicks the breaker.. can anyone tell me why it's doing that? Thank you.
Tracey, don't mess around with the electricity. In Australia it's not legal unless your a qualified electrician, of sorts. Get a tradesman to look at the problem, otherwise it could cause a house fire. I can't diagnose the problem because different colour codes are used in different countries. If you were in Australia where we use 240V AC, I would have a guess that the green earth wire is not properly earthed - which would trip the breaker. Don't take my word though - get an electrician to look at it please!
Q: I am trying to hook up my motorcycle turn signals but am having trouble with the wiring. Off of each signal stem comes a red wire (positve) and black wire (negative). Then coming form my bike I have a purple wire, blue wire, and green wire. I was messing around with the connections and was able to get all my signals to light up, but not in the fashion i need, like blinking correctly. Any suggestions? Do I need to split the wires? Does one wire go to the left signal and one to the right?
Does the flasher work? Are you using two filament bulbs? The green wire is a ground. The blue and purple sound like HD wiring, one is for blinkers, and one for running lights.
Q: In a telephone splice case, do you have to strip the 2 wires you want to splice, and put them together, or does each wire that you want to connect attach to terminals in the case? I am talking about the black cases on a utility pole, that the residential phone wiring connects to.
In okorder .... (but not that big), then no, the wires do not need be stripped, just forced between the tines, the process of which nicks the insulation so the wire is in contact with the terminal. A pro uses a punchdown tool, but you can simulate the effect with a finger on one side and some needle nose pliers on the other. Be sure to seat it well to the back, and don't put more than one wire in a clip. The horizontal rows of 3 or 4 tines are connected together.
Q: i am installing a headunit, i connected all the wires the match, but i have some left over that i am confused about. from the wires that plug into the radio there is the antenna wire, the remote wire, and the ground with a washer to screw it down, and from the other is set of wires is a solid orange wire, which i have no idea where it goes to. so i connected the remote to the orange wire and didn't hook up the antenna to anything, and bolted down the ground wire. I'm wondering why i have 2 ground wires, and what the orange wire is and what do i connect to it?
if its basically static, your audio gadget are effective, verify that not one of the wires are touching, whether its basically one + touching a - the entire gadget will sound undesirable (different than for the sub which gets its sign from a different source. verify at the back of the cd participant and in case you're able to desire to get rid of each and each speaker a million by using a million.
