Q: If you had to pick would it be home or garden?
A secret garden of my own!
Q: Some of my friends and I would like to start a small garden in our backyard. We live in California in the Bay Area, just for extra reference. We'd like to know this:1.) How do we get started?2.) What are some of the easiest vegetables and fruits to plant? (we were thinking lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, or maybe some herbs like thyme or sage)3.) Should we know something about seasons/time of year to plant?4.) How would be then maintain our garden?I'll give BEST ANSWER to the person who answer all these questions in a bit of detail.THANK YOU GUYS/GALS IN ADVANCE!
Start at the book store,,,, SQAURE FOOT GARDENING. Tons of information on how to pack the most, in the smallest space, for the largest yeild. They even discuss the different types of plants, and which ones yeild the most. Also, look at starting an herb garden. Hey, they don't take up much space, and can make your store bought vegitables come to life on your plate. And have you priced good herbs and spices lately. YIKES.
Q: Not sure of the year of the cookbook, but the recipe is not in any current Better Homes and Garden Cookbook or any I have found at the library. I believe the egg foo yung recipe was listed exactly as that. It contained cabbage, bean sprouts, celery, and green pepper. It included a sauce recipe. This is my huband's favorite recipe, and I have lost it. My cookbook fell apart and I operated from the loose page, knowing I should have attached it to something. Procrastination is an awful thing. Tomorrow is my husband's birthday and he always requests this recipe. I know I may be too late here and will have to punt tomorrow, but I would still like the original recipe, if possible. Thank you.
Chinese Brown Sauce: Melt 3 tablespoons fat; add 3 tablespoons enriched flour combined with 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Blend. Add 1 cup hot water and 2 tablespoons soy sauce. Cook over low heat until thick, stirring constantly. Add 1 cup canned bean sprouts, drained. Serve hot. I found it under the Eggs and Cheese section under Shrimp-Egg Foo-Young
Q: I have never gardened before and want to start one. I wanted to do strawberries but i'm not sure if that's the best thing to start off with. I will need to grow something is planters boxes. What is the easiest thing I can start with?
flowers: zinnias or cosmos veggies: radishes or Swiss chard
Q: Some A$$H0LE applied pesticides to my entire home garden, and left a pesticides application sign. I want to know if the vegetables I grew are still safe to eat after I clean it.
It's ok as long as the pesticide is a spray. As you can clean it with soapy water afterwards. However, if it is a systemic (applied into the ground) pesticide the veggie plant will take it in via the root system. This will make the veggie plant unsafe for human consumption.
Q: Most of the windows in my house have a draft coming in and I want to weatherize them, but not sure what to use that won't rip the paint off the window sills after I remove it later on. I've used the kits from Wal-Mart and it either rips off the paint or leaves a sticky residue. I've also tried using regular old saran wrap and scotch tape but that's about useless lol. Also, we have a set of French doors in the bedroom. Are there any special type of curtains I can buy to keep it warmer? Between the French doors, the window above my head of the bed and the basement door all in our bedroom it gets quite cold...about 5-10 degrees colder than the rest of the house.Advice?(FYI, we rent this house so putting in new windows isn't an option. It's a pretty old house (built in 1917) but is fairly well insulated otherwise.)
The plastic is your best bet. You can find tape that won't leave a residue, we've got some up on our windows right now. Also, try filling long tube socks with rice or sand and sewing the open end shut and lying them at the bottom of the doors to keep the drafts out. You can also buy extra thick insulated curtains at walmart, those have helped us a lot too!
Q: If you have a home garden, and you grow more than what you can use, what do you do with the extra? Do you give it to friends and family or do you give it to those in need by way of food pantries at churches or a food bank? Do you give it to homeless shelters? Or do you just let it rot and throw it away?
What my dad do is to give them to friends, family and neigbors! Don't trow them away lol after they have been ate the part of the fruits that can't be eated trow those away, those works as abone lol Also the seeds you can use them to plant more fruits or give them to another person wich will like to plant fruits and stuff hehehe I don't think you can give those to churches because I think they just accept food in can and in boxes and not fresh fruits :( lol But now in summer there are camps for kids so I think you can give them to those camps! Sorry for not been helpfull I don't know much about this and I live in another country lol My original tongue is spanish so, sorry about my ortography xD
