- Q: My chevy s-10 pickup automatic is shifting rough from 1st to 2nd, gives the truck a bump when shifts. Tech says I likely need a valve body replacement. He also indicated I could drive this for a while if I wanted. What more can happen if I prolong replacement? Truck is still at a fair blue book value and I'm wondering if I should sell it now. I have been very lucky in not having to sink any $ aside from normal wear and tear into it, so for me to have it replaced is the first $ investment. I have 103k miles for 2000. Anyone else in a sim sitch, or having multiple problems at this mileage as well? I'm wondering if this is the begininng of the end?

- Q: Com wires attached to com and all individual valve wires are attached. The valves work manually( turn on by hand), I open the valve to allow the box to take over and the sprinklers run. Is this just residual water in the lines??
- I would test the leads inside the control box first... You will have to run the controls manually to troubleshoot the problem. Get a voltage meter to test for the 24 volts at the transformer connections inside the box... If you do not have the 24 volts then the problem will be the transformer. If you have the correct voltage from the transformer then you can test each of the station terminals to common. Test through each station to see if you have 24 volts at each station terminal, but you may have to remove the wires off to test. If you do not have power coming from each station… then the problem will be the rain bird control. The next step would be testing the wires… If you reconnect the wires… test just prior at each valve location to see if you have the 24 volts between the common and each station wire… if you can prove out that there is 24 volts at this location then you’re down to the final testing. Reconnect the valves – one side to the common and the other to each station wire… Getting the power (24v) to the valve should have cleared your problem. Good Luck… Running the valves manually will not affect the operation of the rainbird control... but with my rainbird valves.. you can shut off the valves completely and disable the electrical controls of the valve... make sure that you have not closed the valve off manually preventing the electrical side... a problem with rainbird controls. This does not have anything to do with residual water in the lines... I would test this side first before you get into the electrical side... could save you a lot of time.

- One control valve can reduce pressure, as long as there is always a significant flow through it. The main reason for using more than one valve is usually to reduce or prevent cavitation caused by a large pressure change through a given valve. Ethanol has a pretty high vapor pressure, so cavitation might be a problem. Control valve manufacturers usually provide design guides for their valve trim choices (often in software form) that lead you through the choices and requirements. Each valve design has different limits. But, my seat of the pants feel is that you can do this with one valve. I have included an example. - Q: I just installed a iac valve on my 2001 blazer but didnt go through the reset steps. Do i have to unistall and do the steps or go from here with the reset. Truck stalls out now and surges... Or could i just hava a defective part.

- Q: A question about a hot water radiator bleed valve. I read the advise on previous questions and bleed all my radiators except one where the bleed valve broke off when I tried to turn it with the key. My question is that on the other side of the radiator near the floor there is a black knob that turns which I assume should shut off the radiator. If my assumption is correct then I should be able to shut this off and then remove the bleeding valve and replace it without bleeding the system.. Does this sound right? Thanks,.JOE B
- It has been a long time since I have seen a system like that, but I believe you are correct. The knob on the opposite side of the bleed, is a flow control, which is used to adjust the amount of heat from the radiator. If you turn this all the way off, it should stop the water flow, providing it is not corroded. However, be careful when removing the bleed as the radiator will still have water in it. Try not to drown the neighbours.
- Q: my EGR valve has gone on my Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 DI LS, 1998, 5 DOOR HATCHBACK, so i am getting a new one next week, what i want to know is, is it an easy job to replace them if so how do i do it? or is it better just to let a garage do the job?
- The EGR on this model is indeed vacuum operated. The diaphragm rarely fails to be fair but that particular engine suffers with vacuum leaks. This is something that needs checking first. Also, before buying one, try sucking on the little vacuum connection going into the unit first. You should feel resistance as the plunger is sucked up against spring pressure. If no resistance is met, the diaphragm is gone and it needs replacing. If you can feel the plunger lifting, there is nothing wrong with it. You can remove it to make it easier. Push the plunger in by hand and put your finger over the vacuum connection; the plunger should stay where it is until you take your finger off. (It's hidden under the plastic cover on the top of the engine (3 Torx bolts) and is easy to access.) The EGR valve unfortunately comes with the inlet manifold (expensive) which would mean removing injector pipes etc. if you fit it all. It is, however, very easy to replace if you just remove the 2 bolts holding it into the inlet manifold. They are female Torx but an 8mm 6 point socket will work too. Any other questions on this job, just ask or email.

- Buster Brown is right on the money. Most bikes have double overhead cams these days and the valve clearance tightens up and can cause burned valve faces or seats. Single overhead cam engines using rocker arms tend to loosen up and will clatter more. He's especially on the money about keeping track of valve clearances at each check. I've done that for years as well as keeping record of compression readings.

- Q: This trumpet has been in storage in its casing untouched for about 5 years. I took it out and tried to play it but only air comes out and no sound. The 2nd and 3rd valves are hard to push down. What do I do to fix it? Thanks!
