- Q: Cylinder head valves.Can't really differentiate the difference between burnt and just carbon build up on valves. Are they the same?If I the valves have no cracks or holes, can I clean the carbon off of them and reuse them.If they don't leak when I re-leak test them, are they then good to use?Had very little compression in one cylinder.What cleaner is safe to use on the valves?I know I should replace all, but any money I can save right now, helps a lot.Also I seen a method of re-lapping the valves by using a tool (stick with a suction cup on end that sticks to valve surface) that you spin while valve is seated. - Q: My mother was dx'd with Mitral Valve Prolaspe 20 years ago....she use to take meds for it. My question is she is having very bad fatique symptoms.. uld this be caused from her MVP getting worse???
- first of all, if she is on atenolol (tenormin) then you have to take a pulse before meds and hold med if it is 60 beats per min. if she had trouble with her meds and stopped them for this reason then she should get back on them, and yes mitral valve prolapse is fairly common but is not something you want to ignore or stop treatment for, if she if feeling fatigued she should get checked again, she could have other heart problems. plz have her see a cardiologist ASAP

- Q: Ok so i am 16 years old, and i have Aortic stenosis, bicuspid aortic valve, aortic regurgitation and an Enlarged aorta. I am soon going to be getting an aortic valve replacement. I am just wondering what happens before and after the surgery and how long i will be in the hospital, how long in the ICU, what kind of tubes/machines will i need? any information will help. thanks :)
- They will probably do a tissue valve replacement so there would be no need for life long therapy of blood thinners. As for the post op. Our hospital recovers heart surgeries right in our cardiovascular intensive care unit. We do not reverse anesthesia, we let our patients wake up on their own. Because of this, we have them on a ventilator until they wake up and are functional enough to breath on their own. We also monitor things very invasively, so there are a lot of lines. We have a Swan Gantz catheter which measures the pressures in the heart, an ART line, which measures your blood pressure internally, and an I.V. that goes directly into your heart called a central venous line. Usually after you wake up from surgery, if all your pressures look good, we start to take out those invasive lines and we get you out of bed. Most of our patients are in our unit for 1-2 days if all goes well. Then we transfer them up to the telemetry floor for a couple of days and then we send them home. Valve replacement surgery is still a major surgery but we do them every day and the majority of our patients come out of surgery just fine and are home in a week.

- Engines make power by burning fuel, and this is limited by the amount of air or rather oxygen that can be drawn into each cylinder. Some engines have a single inlet valve and a single exhaust valve. This would be a 2 valve per cylinder engine. So your average 4 cylinder car would have 8 valves. Some cars are 16v or 16 valves! The reason for this is that 4 smaller valves have lots of advantages over a pair of bigger ones! The main one as far as we are concerned is that a 16valve engine or rather a 4 valve per cylinder engine flows more air and makes more power than a 2 valve per cylinder one can.
