- Enameled wire is copper wire coated with a very thin insulating layer. It is used in applications such as winding electric motor coils, speakers and transformers. It is also used in the construction of electromagnets and inductors. The core material is copper, coated with a thin layer of a polyurethane, polyamide, polyester etc resin - the so-called enamel. For ease of manufacturing inductive components like transformers and inductors, most new enamelled wire has enamel that acts as a flux when burnt during soldering. This means that the electrical connections at the ends can be made without stripping off the insulation first. Older enamelled copper wire is normally not like this, and requires sandpapering or scraping to remove the insulation before soldering.

- go to a hardware store and look at the wires yourself....the numbers are printed on the wires....number 12 wire is the size of about 1/8 of a inch....number 14 wire is about the size of a heavy pencil lead......both these wires come in many colors......
- Q: in hooking up a hot wire from the battery to a toggle switch inside a vehicle, i ran a seperate ground wire to the body, there are 2 wires coming from the unit i need to hook to the toggle switch.how do i test to see which one of those is a hot wire? i am not too smart at this. ty kindly
- a test lamp, connect clamp to your known good ground then touch the pencil type end to the hot. if it lights then thats your positive. do it opposite to test for a good ground .
- Q: like lets i want to want to connect my speaker wires with other wires can i use elmer glue so that it sticks and will the wires still work?
- You could always solder it, but no, glue won't allow electricity to pass through.

- You shouldn't need to replace the wires, only splice them back together, color to like color. If you decide to replace them, they are 18 gauge. Depending on the unit that you have, there may be 2, 3, 5, 7, or 9 wires. Install the wire in 3/8 flex to prevent a repeat. Lowes and Home Depot will sell you the wire by the lenght you need. Ask for jacketed wire.

- Car radio wire constant to stereo yellow memory. Car radio wire switched to stereo red 12v positive. Car radio wire illumination to stereo Dashboard Light Dimmer Switch. Don't forget to ground the black wire on the unit to the ground wire from the car harness. An extra ground strap to the chassis is a good idea also. If you don't have an amp or a power antenna, cap off the blue Remote/Antenna wire.
