- Q: Hey! Im trying to fix a rental property i have and this is the first time ive done any work to it. When i arrived the hallway light was not working. It has a switch at each side of the hall. It has White/Black/Red wires. I tried installing a new light and without touching the wires i tried to install it off the white/Black wires and i couldnt recieve power. I tried messing around and cant seem to figure it out. Is the red wire needed for a simple hallway light? What is it there for? . also maybe related in one of the bedrooms i have an elec outlet plug i replaced and worked for about a day Then randomly it stopped working and i checked the wire connection to the plug and they seem fine. i also tried a new outlet plug to see if that was the problem (it wasnt) what could be the problem it is the only outlet in the room that doesnt work. Thanks!!

- If there is a group of two groups of weak lines, in order to prevent interference, should be more than 200mm distance, the specific requirements should be based on the scope of electromagnetic fields.
- Q: Hi, I am doing a sweep on my home and checking everything from structure to electrical, attic, etc.I found that I have maybe old knoband tube wiring.the home does have some upgraded romex outletsexisting. The funny looking wiring has what look like a white porcelain loooking gadjet that is round and has a nail sticking thru it and a piece of wire going into. The top knob just unscrews and acts as some sort of clamp, don't really know.Anyways,a wire has corroded(just my luck) and broke in to when I barely touch it and now some of my lights are not working. When the wires are touched back together the lights affected turn back on.Can I just retwist it together since there is a little slack and put a wire cap on it,or can I just pull out that line from whence it broke and add 14/2 romex or just a pigtail at the broke section? Some wiring in my home may be aluminum but copper color has that cloth around it and some has worn all the way off which I am thinking to wrap in electrical tape and not leave exposed? Thanks
- I would get a qualified electrical engineer to take a look because you can't see areas that are not exposed, and it sounds to me that your house might need rewiring for your own safety and also to meet regulations.
- Q: Water pipe in the next line in which the norms have to solve
- Oh, the chassis of this thing or belong to the "heavy industry" products, thin when the evaluation of electronic industrial products standards, the chassis does not apply
- Q: I am adding a new electrical outlet and need to know how many volts the electrical wire needs to be rated for. I will be running the new outlet from an existing outlet This existing outlet uses a wire that reads Type NM-B WITN Ground 600 Volts. Does this mean the wire from the existing outlet to new outlet also has to be 600 Volts? I have a 120 Volt laying around but it doesn't sound like I should use that one. Am I right? Thanks!
- 14 gauge is the correct wire for all lighting and standard outlets. Use 15 amp breakers for this wire. #12 gauge wire is for 20amp service. It is larger in size than 14 gauge. More commonly used for microwave outlets and fridge outlets. It all dependa on what you are adding the outlet for. Things to remember. By code (differs in areas) you cannot just add another outlet to an existing outlet unless you know exactly what else is on the same line. A maximum of 11 items on any single run. (Duplex outlets count as one each, lights count as one per bulb). If you are not sure whats what, I would suggest you find out BEFORE you add it so you don't end up burning down your house. If you want to do it anyway, you CAN join the two sizes (in a proper junction box). Good Luck.Be Safe
- Q: Hi all :)I am looking in to re-wiring a house that has not been re-wired since the 50's. I have been looking at the electrical system where the wires are external to the wall, but in trunking. Does anyone know how much that would cost and if there are any negatives, apart from the aesthetic elements?
- If properly done, it should work fine. This is a peculiar use of the work trunking, which to an electrical engineer means running a plurality of circuits from a single feeder. (It has nothing to do with the conveyance of the wiring.)
- Q: I am installing electrical wiring to an 8x12 portable building. I would like to have about five 110 outlets. One outlet will run a 5,000 btu ac. The other will run a small refrigerator. Can I run all this will a single 110 breaker?
- Add up the estimated wattage you will most likely draw through the line and if it's well under a 15 amp breaker then yes, otherwise install two. (Note it is a 15 amp breaker not a 110 breaker.) One 15 amp breaker for the a/c unit the other 15 amp breaker for the outlets. If it's going to be a work shop with motors that draw a slug of start-up current then it would pay to have each outlet on it's own breaker. Home Depot and/or Lowe's sell books on how to do things like this. Even have the lights on it's own breaker. Again, all of this has to add up to less current draw than the supply line you are running out to the shed. Learn before hand and know the building/electrical codes for your state/area or you may be tearing it all out. Insurance companies love diy's that mess up as they don't have to pay.
- Q: I have a cooktop. wires coming out of it were cut at base of unit and i need to extend them. I already did and am now concerned my work is not safe the wires appear to be stranded 10 guage. I extended them with aluminum connectors that have set screws and then taped the hell ot of them. The wire I connected them to is ten guage. the unit now says it takes a 40 amp cir and to use 8 guage wire is this safe? shoudl I just use a 30 amp breaker instead?
- Pat From Ohio is correct! Covering connected wires without access is not only just a fire hazzard, but foolish. Even if you 'think' you will never have to access it again, there are conditions when you have to. Not to mention, if you were ever to sell the house, the new owner wouldn't have a clue it is there. No matter how 'tight' the wire nuts are, a short is always possible. Down the road someone else could replace the existing breaker with the wrong one and POOF! The 'hidden' connection burns up. Though it may not even cause any potential fire hazzard, trying to trace your short could be impossible if you don't know exactly where it is. They make many types of 'faux' (fake swiches, etc.) covers that you could use over the junction box. Do not put it behind the drywall or any other wallboard. Use your imagination as to how to make it a part of the scheme! Please use a junction box! If not for your own safety, how about the folks next door? Or the pets left alone that day! Good Luck!
