- Q: Last night we found our basement carpet soaked after a rainstorm---there was not standing water (until we pulled up the carpet and padding), but it was set enough to squish when you walk, etc. We pulled up the carpet and threw away the padding. We've been trying to dry it out with a fan, but it doesn't seem to be helping. What steps should we take to save the carpet? We really can't afford to replace it right now. - Carpet tiles over full carpet. The carpet in my childhood bedroom has silly putty stuck in it, marker stains, nailpolish stains, paint spills, you name it. Carpet tiles are good for young kids because you can REPLACE them. Accidents happen, kids are messy and getting someone to clean your carpet is expensive. This also gives you the option to change the flooring when your daughter gets older if she wants something different. Picking up carpet tiles is cheaper then hiring someone to take out old carpet and install new.

- Q: Does anyone have a good recommendation for carpeting with someone who has a lot of pets? I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and want to get carpet in my home but not sure if it's best to get berber or shag or plush..... sigh, so many carpet choices! I currently have hardwood flooring but I'd prefer carpeting. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Thank you.
- Plush carpets are more comfortable but a berber will stand up to heavy traffic and abuse better. The other things you want to consider is color and texture. The more texture, the better it will hide traffic wear. Try to find something with multi color flecks, it will help to hide stains. No matter what carpet you choose pets can cause a lot of damage to it. Especially if they track in dirt and mud or if they pee or vomit on the carpet. Since you already have hardwood floors you might want to buy carpet and have it turned into an area rug. The flooring store where you buy it should be able to arrange for the carpet to be bound ( having a cloth strip stiched around the edges), and get you a protective underlayment to put between the hardwood and the rug. You can have the rug made to any shape and size you want. Since you won't have to pay for installation you save some money, you won't damage your wood floors and it'll be easier to change in the future.

- Hi I would recommend using a wet vac and slowly pour hot water (almost to the boiling point) on the spot and vacuum it up at the same time (this will open up the dye ports on the carpet fibre releasing the stain. and remove the residue from the carpet). If the stain is still visible than use a little carpet spotter on it or Dawn dishwashing liquid (2 or 3 drops into one cup of water) and repeat step 1. The stain may come back in a few days so you may have to do this a few times. Please DO NOT put anything on the carpet that was not made for carpet. At this point if the stain is still there please call a carpet cleaner. Carpet cleaner of 14 years

- You could use a box cutter. But the ends would eventually fray. You would need to research how to sew the ends so they don't fray apart, or you'll get carpet pieces all over your floor.
