- Find a good carpet cleaner. ;) Depends on the color of the carpet, really. Find a mild cleaner -- or even laundry soap, if you aren't sure what cleaners to use -- and put a bit on the carpet. Get a toothbrush or something that can really get in the carpet and scrub as hard as you can. Rinse w/hot water, blow dry it and see how it looks. Oddly enough, I just finished scrubbing hot sauce out of a white area rug thanks to my kid. ha!

- Have you tried calling your insurance company? It is really hard to get that out of a carpet and the bacteria that may be growing can be dangerous especially if you have allergies. If you do call them make sure to ask like it's a hypothetical question. You know, act like you've been shopping around a little more and you wanted to know if you have coverage for that situation and what it would cost to get that kind of coverage etc. If you have no insurance you might want to just get an estimate from a professional cleaning company. The ones that specialize in flood or fire damage clean up. If you are truly desperate and have very little to spend you could try some oxy-clean. Mix up a couple of gallons of it. Spray it over the carpet until you've saturated the whole area including the mat underneath and then leave it for about one hour. Then use a commercial cleaning machine(the kind you rent from a store) to suck up as much of the water as possible. Put a fan on the carpet and turn either your air conditioner or heat on because that will help dehumidify the area and make it dry up faster. After it's all nicely dried (aproximately 1 to 2 days). Sprinkle the carpeting with a powdered carpet odor remover and vaccuum it up after a few minutes. Oxy clean does kill mildew which is the culprit in most carpet smells. Oxy clean can remove some of the color from your carpet but not like bleach does! I haven't had it lighten anything of mine but that is the warning on the package! My daughter likes to play with water on her carpet in her bedroom (much to my dismay!) The oxyclean and carpet deodorizer work well at getting rid of that horrible smell.

- Step 1 Always clean up pet messes as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Step 2 Identify the odiferous areas of your carpet. If you're not sure where they are, darken the room and turn on a black-light bulb to highlight any dried accident spots. Step 3 Deep-clean the problem areas using a water-extraction carpet-cleaning machine or a carpet-shampoo machine and cool water only--no chemicals or cleaners. (To rent or buy one of these machines, look under Carpet and Rug Cleaners' Equipment and Supplies or a similar heading in the yellow pages.) Step 4 Sprinkle an enzyme-containing pet-odor-neutralizing powder (available at pet stores or your vet's office) on the affected areas. Pet-odor-neutralizing powders contain live bacteria and enzymes that digest odor-causing protein and bacteria, permanently removing it from the deepest fibers in your carpet. These products also contain a mild cleanser that can help remove discoloration. Alternatively, you can use borax powder or baking soda, but they are less effective in eliminating stubborn odors. Step 5 Let sit for 8 hours. Step 6 Vacuum the treated areas. Let sit for 24 hours. Step 7 If odor remains after you have treated the carpet with an enzyme odor neutralizer, repeat the treatment as needed to eliminate lingering odors. Step 8 Understand that in severe cases where the soiling has occurred for an extended period of time, you may need to replace the carpet padding. Good Luck!
