- Q: We are getting the carpet throughout the house redone. We had planned on a high quality laminate, but apparently our floors slope too much for that. Now we have to go with carpet. I fear a berber throughout will look too industrial, not homey enough. My husband feels like flush style looks like apartments he had in the 70s. The carpet salesman is recommending the same carpet in the whole 3 floor house. - A plush or a textured carpet ( I like textured since its hard to see footprints and vacuum marks) Either of those work well to give you a warm homey feeling. As far as the kids and spilling , I suggest a pad that won t allow moisture to go through . These are commonly call pet proof pads. Not allowing the moisture to seep all the way down to the wood subfloor, you prevent possible mold and its easier to get any liquids back though the carpet and this prevents restaining for from wicking. - Basic carpet can be installed with a pad for around 3$ a s/f .(+-) It can be higher or lower with the quality of the carpet and pad. This based on you getting a 15' wide carpet (thus no seams) for 225 s/f. Thats 675 $ for carpet pad and labor. This generally won t include rip out of whats there now, floor prep ( if needed) , furniture moving and disposal. Remember this can vary with quality of pad and carpet. - Q: My cat likes to back her rear end up to the edge of the litter box, resulting in her 'missing the target' and getting cat urine on my carpet. She also likes to kick the litter out of the box.In using a carpet cleaner, some of the litter left a grey-ish stain on my tan carpet. As we are renting this home, new carpet is not an option.Would a Rug Doctor remove this stain? Would it just make the stain worse, by getting more of the litter wet?
- Move tray, try a dry carpet cleaning powder. Foam cleaners work well if used correctly. Deodorize and vacuum regularly. I put old newspaper under cat tray in case the cat as an accident.

- Without knowing what the rug is made of, I'm not sure of what to tell you exactly. If you think you could wash it in the washing machine, try that. If your washer isn't big enough, maybe a triple load washer at the laundromat will work. If it's too big for the washer you could take it to the carwash and use the clips on the wall of the carwash stall to hang the rug on. Spray the rug with the soapy water, making sure to rinse well. Take it home (take some large trash bags with you to avoid getting your car soggy) and let it dry in the sun, perhaps over your fence.

- I`m with Wheeza on the first part, however, for actual installation Start on the walls that will be *Seen* first when you enter the room. That way your pieces won`t be as visible esp if the walls are not square and you have a 3 inch piece at one end and 6 inches at the other end (don`t laugh, it happens). You can use Any carpet glue available at Home Depot and as Wheezer says, hardware stores using a notched trowel. Don`t spread too thick `tho or it will smush up through your tiles esp if thin and make a heck of a mess. Just make sure it`s not flammable. My brother and I set fire to a kitchen once not realizing the stuff was flammable. When the fumes hit the water heater it spread over the floor where I was spreading and up the walls (old house with flammable paint/thinner used) quicker than we could blink. Hope this helps. - When the person we had come over and feed the cats cleaned up a fur ball she used the only thing she could find, comet dishwasher detergent with bleach. I saved a remnant when they installed the carpet and had somebody splice it in but it still didn't look right. Actually the maintenance guys there might know just the trick. But most of the time people don't get their deposit back unless it's in better condition than when you moved in (if documented on move in) was my experience. You could call or see a professional cleaning or janitorial service and ask if they could help you out with some tips and some types of dyes to use. You could buy a carpet sample that is similar for a buck or two and experiment on it, buy a couple fabric dyes but don't make it worse than it already is. This has huge potential for disaster so be super careful, a professional would be better.
- Q: I'm thinking about buying a 9'2 x 12' 11 rug, but there are no rug pads with these dimensions. The closest pad size would be 8 x 10. Is it okay that the rug pad doesn't fit exactly with the rug or do I need to get a custom rug pad?
- A rug pad should always be just a bit smaller than the rug, so you can't see it and so the rug sits on the floor at the edge. If your pad were to big just as big, you'd likely trip on it often.
