More Applications of Windshield Wiper Blades:
- Q: My daughter (just turned 2 yesterday) is terrified of windshield wipers, she is afraid of not only seeing them move, but the noise they make as well (She‘s afraid of them whether it‘s just visual or just noise, or both.) We had to use the wipers all day today and she just cried the whole time (we were in the car for a total of three hours, I‘d say) and closed her eyes. I was thinking maybe I could show her the wipers from the outside, but I think that may scare her more. I‘ve tried saying, Mommy is here, nothing can hurt you, or, They have never hurt you before have they? But that doesn‘t work. Please don‘t tell me not to take my child out, that is simply not healthy. I know I could go out for shorter amounts of time (under normal circumstances, but not now as my parents are in town and we go out a ton) but I still hate to see her so afraid. Also, we have to use the wipers when we do, like today there was a snow storm. Any ideas on how else to get her over this?
- Try making them a game. Find songs to match the beat and only sing them when the wipers are on. The sillier the better. Tie some small bright ribbon bows on them (don't obscure your vision) to make them less frightening. Ask her to give them names. When they have to be used have her call them (Susie, Jane get busy Mommy needs help).
- Q: I own a 1994 Chevy Impala SS and the windshield wipers have totally deteriorated. For the life of me, I can NOT figure out to remove this style of blade. If someone knows of a tutorial that includes pictures or a video I would greatly appreciate it.
- SAWZALL!!! Dude figue it out, its not that hard, geesh
- Q: how do I fix the motor
- Most likely the parking mechanism in the wiper motor module is jacked up not allowing the wipers to actually park(Turn Off) May need to verify this with a good reputable shop, I would try a dealership if you do not know any good mechanic friends.
- Q: The wipers on the car work, but sporadically. They seem to work fine in low speed and high speed, but in delay mode will sometimes stop in the middle of the windshield. Also getting them to park takes a few flips on the stalk control to land them in the parked position. Is this a wiper motor issue, or is there something else I should be looking at ? Thanks for any help
- Sounds like the limit switches in the wiper motor assembly are going. There was a time when those were adjustable but it has passed. It's time for a new wiper motor assembly.
- Q: I have replaced a heater core on VW jetta vr6 2000 and after i was done i started the car and the windshield wipers handle was on and the wipers started moving and i turned the handle down and didnt move since then!!i made sure the wipers harness is tightned good and nothing happened!! they arent working and i replaced the fuses toowhat do you think is the problem??
- Ouch, well it could be one of those deals where it just went out. Unbeleivable huh but it happens. The best thing you can do is just check for power at the wiper motor with the wiper switched turned on. Now if you dont have power and you checked the fuses and they have power. The next step is to check your wiper switch at the handle. you should have power going in and when you have the wipers on high you should have power coming out, Do that check in that order and you should find it.
- Q: can lubricating windshield wipers make them last longerif so what lubricant and whatis the best way to maintain windshield wipers? thanks.
- Do not put any type of lubricant on the windshield wipers. Anything you put on them will immediately transfer to the windshield which will leave you with less than desirable results. You can clean them every month or so with some rubbing alcohol, just wet a cloth with the alcohol and squeeze the wiping portion of the blade with the cloth and run it up and down the blade a few times, this will remove built up dirt and make them wipe better.
- Q: My windshield wipers still work, but I‘m constantly driving around like a dork because when I turn them off, they seem to think that staying in the upright position is correct. I don‘t claim to be an auto whiz, but I assume there is a motor that controls the wipers. Is there anything I can do short of sending it off to a mechanic‘s shop?
- On some wiper systems, a Park relay is incorporated. This relay returns the wiper arms to their park position. The relay should be located in the fuse panel inside the vehicle or under the hood.
- Q: is there someway to increase the pressure ?
- There isn't a way to increase the pressure on an old worn wiper arm. As far as the removal goes, it likely isn't the original arm, so the method of removal depends on the design. Easiest solution? Find an Auto parts dealer who replaces wiper arms and blades at no charge when you buy them. In my town Advance Auto parts does it free. They are a national chain, and probably do it at most locations.
- Q: Last week, our passenger side windshield wiper randomly stopped working. Our driver‘s side one has done something like this before, but my dad was able to fix it pretty easily. My husband took our car to AutoZone this morning, and they told him that it was going to be hard to fix, so they couldn‘t do it. They said that there‘s something going on underneath (not the motor, though). Does anyone know what this could be and about how much this type of thing should cost?
- Everybody says buy new blades, right ? Well lets see if we can fix the problem first. Go to the spot where the wiper arm is mounted to the car, lift the plastic cover off and you should see a nut holding down the wiper arm. Usually 12 mm could be 13mm , take it off, and lift the wiper arm all the way back. ( 90 o to the windshield) There should be grooves running lenghtwise on the shaft part that is tapered. Wipe those clean with a rag or wire brush. NOT your fingers. Spray oil helps loosen the pieces. Try and clean the hole on the wiper arm. Chances are the grooves on the arm are now being scraped off the shaft. Its a kind of safety so you dont burn out the motor in case of what just happened. A new arm would be the best bet $15-40 most jobbers. But in a pinch just wrap a small piece of aluminum foil 3/8 x 3/4 around the splined section of the shaft and reinstall the old arm , make sure that the wipers are ' Parked ' before putting it together, leave the arm up when you first test it. Remember to remove the tin foil when you put the new arm on. This is only a quick fix and may well last years, but I make no such claim. Fix it right and get a new arm
- Q: I have an 89 GMC and the wipers don‘t work. I‘ve already checked the fuses, they‘re fine. Anything else I can try?
- One of my customers recently had the same problem on his '91 S-10, and it was just the chassis ground for the wiper motor. It's not very solid, and happens easily from corrosion. Very easy to check too. Just run a jumper wire from the metal part of the case to a known good ground. (battery negative, or something you've checked for ground with a test light) If it starts to work, all you need to do is take out the mounting bolts and clean them up, along with the little brass tab that one of these bolts clamp down on. Of course if you just go ahead and replace the motor, it will start working anyway, because you've fixed the ground by accident. But this way costs nothing except 5 minutes of your time if that's what the problem is. ;-)
