Q: where can I find free pattern to weave a rug on a rigid weaving loom?
Are you working on a rug now? As you know, a rigid heddle loom has limitations. You can only do plain weave, and for a rug, this is just fine. If you are using rag strips, that is even better. The patterning will come from the colour of the horizontal stripes you are weaving. You can change them at will, or according to a set pattern. The patterns are only limited to your imagination! I would make a small drawing on paper and then just use coloured pencils or crayons to make horizontal stripes. If you have patterned material to work with, you may not need to make much of a design because the wefts (the cross threads) will make a design of their own. How wide is your rigid heddle? Most are fairly narrow -- perhaps up to 22 wide. Your rug is going to be quite narrow. You may want to piece two of them together side by side, and that offers further possibilities for creating a pattern. Just go wild!! You can do anything you want.
Q: I just dropped a candle on my light colored carpet and red candle wax is everywhere. Any ideas on how to remove it?
Place ice-cubes on the wax until the ice starts to melt then scrape away as much wax as possible with a blunt knife, then lay sheets of paper towel over the wax.Using a cool iron go over the area.If a greasy mark remains rub with a little tea tree oil. I would try it on a small section first as this is used on material so am not sure it will work on carpet.
Q: Hi, I need help with identifying an old rug. A friend of mine, an Englishman who now resides in Florida, possesses this rug. It is white with white tassels, and a black border around the rug itself. The design is quite intriguing as red, black and white are the only colors used. Repeated motifs are a black circle made into quarters, colored in with red, two rows of three black triangles with red dots on them, three sideways flames with lines around them, and what looks like three chickens or three birds, repeated throughout the rug.. My friend was born in Karachi Pakistan in 1965 and this rug was given to his parents by Pakistani friends at the time of his birth...if anyone knowledgeable can help me I.D. this rug, he and I would thank you. We think it may be a Muslim prayer rug...peace. The birds do not show eyes (an Islamic prohibition!)thanksxxxany knowledgeable, serious help would be appreciated.
I've had limited dealings with antique rugs; I used to assist an antiques dealer who dealt with a good number of rugs, including prayer rugs. I do not think from what you are relating that the rug is a Muslim prayer rug. Prayer rugs incorporate the design of a mihrab; that is, the niche in the wall of mosques used to indicate the direction of Mecca, an important consideration in Islamic prayer. If there is no indication of a direction on the rug, it is most likely not a prayer rug. Also, a well-used prayer rug would show signs of wear and tear, particularly wear in the spots where a worshipper knelt for their prayers. If you can see no obvious wear in areas to indicate use, it cannot be an antique. It sounds like a simple household rug of local Pakistani manufacture, not much older than 40 years. The bird design you describe is common, and I have seen it myself in many rugs.
Q: I have carpeting that I just got in December of 07 and in a rush yesterday, left my hair straightener turned on setting on my carpet! I got home and notice it was still on and it has scorched my brand new carpet!!!! So stupid, I know! Its a small spot, but its now brown and my carpet is very light tan mix so it shows well. Is there anything that I can do to bring the color back or at least make it look a little less obvious without replacing the carpet?
My ex-wife works in a real-estate type business. It really depends on where the burn mark is (traffic area etc). I know some carpet places will actually cut a section of carpet out totally and refit another piece cut from a different area, like a walk in robe or closet. I have seen the repair jobs done by a PROFESSIONAL and you cant tell the difference. I know this wont help you if you don't have an area to sacrifice another piece. Your carpet being new could be a benefit (off cuts or a new piece from the company who supplied it) Hope I helped, just throwing options out there for ya. Cheers
Q: We've recently moved houses and have found there is sandflies/biting insects everywhere. Into the afternoon my TB mare especially is being eaten alive by the insects and is rubbing herself on the fences and she now is starting to loose her coat because of it. I'm looking at buying at coat for her that we can put on her to hopefully stop the insects but as well the sun, but I have know idea what type of rug I should get her... We live in a really hot and humid area so we need something cool. Is there anyone who can help??
There okorder and also maybe on OKorder. I had a TB who had the same issue. Other things that help are: coating them with flyspray every chance you get AND using those Fly Predators things... they really work but I think the season is over for them.
Q: Someone told me that decorators have a general rule for the size area rug you need for a room. It is something about a certain number of feet of exposed floor around the perimeter of a room. Does anyone know about this? Thanks.
There's no perfect answer. You have to decide if you want to have furniture on the carpet, completely off the carpet or partially on the carpet. Then decide the size. After that you can either look for a pre made rug or have one made.
Q: I want to make carpet skates but don't know what material to use.
u don't really need much to make them. Carpet skating is possible if you use any material under your feet that will slide on carpeting. This also works on hard floors, too. To skate on carpet, start with a pair of nice thick socks. Cut out plastic foot pads for the bottoms and sew them in place. The plastic bottom will slide on the carpet without hurting the carpet material. To skate on wood, linoleum or any hard floor... just use the thick socks. Some kids do this without thinking about it. Carpet and sock skating is like any other type of skating. Please be safe. Don't try it near obstacles or furniture. Make sure surfaces are clean. Keep it simple. Real carpet skates are pretty cheap and probably offer a better surface for sliding:
Q: My husband had grease from the shop on his shoes and walked on my beige carpet. Now I have small little strips of grease on the floor. What is the best way to remove it without killing my carpet
Perhaps your husband has an aerosol can of Brake Cleaner in the garage.Spray some on to a white terry cloth towel and then gently rub the grease, it should transfer into the rag. This product has a slight odor to it, so do this cleaning when it is ideal to do so. Get the rag out of the house when you are finish to get rid of what odor you have control over. I used to use Trichlorethane III for this, it was un flammable, but now substitute aerosol brake cleaner. Do not use carbureator cleaner as this is to smelly. Charcoal Lighter fluid will also work as will WD40, the Brake Fluid Aerosol is faster. Do not allow any solvents to come in contact with the adhesive in the backing of the carpet.
Q: There is this rug I love but I just looked at the materials and it said 100% latex backing. I am allergic to latex. Can I use this rug? Or every time I step on it will it bother me?
Not sure if it will bother you but you need to consider that latex backed rugs can discolor the flooring underneath of them. It might be better to choose a non-latex backed rug.
Q: Someone that moved in with me recently broke the wireless internet adapter to my computer and since I haven't figured out how to fix it I think it may be easier for me to just run a wire from the router to my computer. The problem is that the router is on the xbox in my room and the computer is in my living room 30 feet away. I am getting a 50ft Ethernet cable but I don't want to run it straight across my floor and plan to run it through my basement. I have hardwood floors in my room and there is already a hole to my basement there but my computer is over stretched carpet. I am wondering if I can put a small hole less than 1 inch in the carpet without damaging it or creating a spot that will wear more quickly.
Drive a nail through the carpet where you wnt to bring the wire back up. Locate the nail in the basement, remove the nail. Slowly drill up from the basement, trying not to get into the carpet(it will twist around the drill and damage it more than necessary.) Be sure the drilled hole is big enough for the end of the wire, slice the carpet with a razor-blade in an X and feed it through.
