- Q: My husband and I bought a house where most of the rooms (kitchen, dining room, entertainment room, den, and laundry room) are all tiled with these Terra cotta like tiles. They are a southern type rusty red and stain easily. My husband loves the tiles and wants to keep them. He‘s concented on changing the color if I want though, as long as I keep the origional tile. I‘m trying to make the house look a bit more elegant/country (Blues, silvers, whites, golds, dark greens, etc. Elegant and formal but still bright and airy) While keeping the tile, is there any way to stain it another color and do some kind of glossy seal? What color might keep that feel? What kind of products work best?
- Painting the tile is a horrible idea, Your husband doesn't love the tile he loves the money hes not spending. Do it right or don't do it at all, if you paint the tile you will have created a real downer at the time of resale, that will have to be given an allowance to replace Carpet, area rugs or replace it
- Q: I was quoted $5.75 for tile install and $2.25 for concrete board per square foot.
- If that is what you were quoted by someone who is going to do the job - then that is the going rate for them. Which is likely in line with what other installers of tile charge in your area. Get other estimates or quotes from the people who will actually do the job. There is no standard/going rate that is applicable in every city, in every state across the country.
- Q: i have these ugly light blue ceramic tiles in my kitchen (as a backsplash)..they are fairly big squares ... and the owner before me tried to paint the grout between them because the paint (or whatever it was) is coming off so now the grout is gross dark grey coming through...anyways...i was wondering if anyone had some easy ideas to cover up the ceramic tiles.
- I think you need to take them off the wall and then resurface. It isn't as bad a job as you think once you get started.
- Q: I am looking at purchasing a home but on the disclosure form from the seller, it shows that there is asbetos tiles on the basement floor.I know asbetos is a problem but in this case how much would it cost to remove it? should this be a deal breaker?
- Best thing is to cover the tiles with another floor covering, rather than to try to remove them. They're not dangerous just sitting there, it's the dust from breaking them up/apart/removal that can be really bad. Check on the local laws of removal.
- Q: I just finished laying tile in my shower. How long do I need to wait before I grout? If it makes any difference they are simple 4 inch white tiles. Also, just out of curiosity, I was told I needed to spread the adhesive on the wall and place the tiles over that. It seems like it would have been easier to apply the adhesive to the back of the tiles. Especially the last few tiles. Does this make any difference?
- I put adhesive on wall as base and lightly spread adhesive onto back of tile to help create stronger bond. Follow adhesive instructions for grouting, cure times vary with adhesives. Better to wait than not to have adhesive set and wind up with moisture troubles and loose tiles from adhesion loss.
- Q: I‘m looking to re-tile my kitchen... I would like to get good quality tile, at a good price. Can I trust tile purchased at any particular large hardware chain, or should I seek out a specialty flooring store? Or does it even matter that much - is tile just tile?
- Just ask the sales person what the PEI rating is. This is a universal rating scale used to judge the hardness and durability of ceramic and porcelain tiles. The scale runs from 1 to 5 with five being the hardest. In a high traffic area, like a kitchen, please don't use anything below a 3. 1 and 2 ratings have the weakest finish on the market, these will be any tile that's between $0.50 and $1.50 per square foot, at least in the Mid-west. please make sure that your tile is installed on concrete or concrete board. otherwise, it WILL crack up on you. Good Luck!!
- Q: What is the drill bit?
- Ordinary glazed tiles can be hammer or dual-use drill with the impact drill, The tiles should be fitted with hand drill with glass drill.
- Q: I have a pistol grip glass cutter with a carbide cutting wheel....can this be used to cut ceramic tile, or am I better off to get tile nippers?
- It really depends on the tile. All tile cuts differently. The width of your cut even makes a difference. You basically have to test your tile to find out. Most tile cuts easily. Tiles from Italy and Brazil can be a nightmare requiring slow water cuts. A set of hand nippers is a must.....to clean cuts and make inside corners......as well as cuts for plumbing and electrical. Shop around.....there are some single use tile tools available on the market.
- Q: Which is good for acid resistant tiles
- Hao Ran acid-resistant ceramic tile is the main component of silica, the use of imported raw materials and imported color raw materials made by high temperature firing.
- Q: The last people to live in my house decided to use black spray paint on the bathroom tiles and it looks awful (not to mention the fact that it is peeling and uneven as it wasn‘t done properly). However the tiles underneath are blue and white so I would like to keep them. What is the best way to remove the black paint without scratching the surface of the ceramic tiles?
- You can try paint thinner and a heavy scrub brush, it worked for me, or you can get some professional tile cleaner.
