Q: I need some guidance on hanging new wall tiles in my bathroom.1) can I tile over the existing tiles2) what are the pro‘s/con‘s of ready mixed adhesive against mix your own3) is all grout standard waterproof or do i need specialist stuff4) do you tile all the walls then replace the suite or put the new suit in first then tile? bearing in mind i hope to tile over existing tiles.5) is it true you shoudl first replace your bath, fill it with water and leave it overnight to level?Any guidance would be much appreciated......: 1. Tile can be done over clean well bonded tile only 2. You should only use a premixed adhesive in a non wet area only. Any areas such as a bath tub or shower enclosure a cement based thin set ( thin sets are all cement based) Mastics or premixed adhesive are water based and will dissolve or lose their bond over time in a wet area.Although there are some premixed thin sets but I don t trust them and have never used them since its so much cheaper to use and mix thin set. 3.Standard grout is cement based and IS NOT water proof at all! Only your epoxy grouts are.. 4 Tubs or shower base must be in before tile. Stools optional unless your doing floors which you only said walls. The exception is if your doing behind the stool as in a wainscot. 5.Putting water in a tub will not level it. Follow manufactures suggestions on this since they vary from maker to maker and styles. Water in a tub is recommended only when caulking the tile edge at the tub. Let caulking dry and let water out. Any questions you can e mail me through me avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

Q: I live in a single-level ranch style house but on a concrete pad. I am re-tiling the kitchen floor. I live in Bakersfield, CA which is a dry and arrid climate.: As long as it's not ceramic tiles, if so, I'd tear off the tiles. If it's linoleum, make sure you have a good subflooring and knock yourself out! Fallow the recommendations of the spacing around the walls AND take the time to bring in your flooring and let it in the room it'll be used for at least 24 hrs to dilate with the room's temperature and humidity. Don't pile all the packs in one corner, they need to breathe.

Q: I‘m installing a kitchen back splash of 1 x 1 glass tile. Right now there is drywall where the tile will be. I‘ve read that it is better to use cement backing board as a substrate. Is this really necessary or can I just use thin-set to mount the tile directly to the drywall and then grout as usual? Thanks for your help!: The drywall is fine. Make sure you press all the air bubbles out of the thinset or they will look really bad when dry.

Q: I am renovating, and have always loved white coloured tiles but am now starting to like these light coloured hardwood Tasmanian Oak Floorboards ....I have no idea on prices yet, what would cost more? and which one would look more beautiful??PS- i would NEVER put floating floorboards - they are cheap and nasty!: Hardwoods are classic. You can never go wrong with hardwood floors as far as resell value. I renovated two years ago. We have a 1500 sq/ft home. We did tile in the bath and hardwoods everywhere else. My husband wanted to tile the kitchen as well but we were talked out of it due to labor costs. Cleaning tile grout is troublesome, sealing it is ineffective if you have food stains or mud or something. My tile floors are very pretty but I regret it. Be sure to get real hardwood with NO laminate at all. Some hardwood floors are real wood on the surface but laminated onto a synthetic bottom. Be careful that way. Things to ask before choosing: How many times can they be refinished? Are they glued or nailed? (Glued are crappy, nailing is much more effective.) How do I clean them? (I use a steamer, no chemicals.) Will my subfloor support the hardwood? (we had to install a new subfloor). Oak and Hickory are the best HARD woods to choose from.

Do I have to replace the entire area?: FINDING OLD TILES ARE LIKE FINDING OLD CAR PARTS slim and none,but don.t dis pair remove one of the old broken or not and take it to local tile only store home depot probably will be of little help as they know their currant supply and only supplier.if all else fails find a complementary style and size and create a new pattern removing the broken and possibly a few not so broken create a new design or bite the bullet.careful in the removal of tiles near tile you want to keep remove grout surrounding the tile you want to remove before you break it out the grout will transfer the impact of a hammer to surrounding tiles breaking more than you want

For a project as small as a fireplace, they are sure to have some discounted lots of material like that you can get a good deal on. I find specialty places like that have much better prices and selection than the big box stores. It's something you need to find locally, not on line, since shipping is prohibitive for construction materials.

Q: Can you put ceramic tile over the commercial grade hard plastic vinyl tile? It would be really hard to break up off the floor. It is stuck on there really good.: No. Unless you put concrete backer board over the vinyl first, then the tiles onto the backer board. The only problem with this is that you would be raising your floor by an inch or so, and could run into problems with door jambs, molding, transitions, etc.

Q: I need pink ceramic 4x4 tiles to repair an old bathroom. At least 80 of them. Where might I find them?: Trying to color match old tiles may be impossible. Look for tile stores in the yellow pages. The tile stores are a lot more likely to have something that will match or come close than a Home Depot or Lowes.
