Q: I need tips on how to install tiles around bathroom walls. I have the walls up and taped. Now what??? I leveled and drew a line under the window cell horizontal and vertical. 1) Do I start tiling from the tub up?2) How do I seal - or do I have to seal the tiles (Ceramic tiles 4x4)?3) What type of sealer should I use? Please give me a name that I can easily find @HD or loews.
You should start from the tub up. so you have a nice finished edge where it meets the tub. You start from the center of the long wall so that the cuts on each end are the same. On the short walls you start from the outside so that once agin you have a clean factory edge. Normally you don't have to seal bathroom tiles they have a gloss finish, right? You do have to grout them however, the tiling department at Home Depot will have a few choices, in many colours. Pick one that matches your tiling job, and the paint colour. Read the grouting instructions a couple of times. Be careful when mixing grout, a little water at a time!
Q: I want to replace the existing ugly linoleum/vinyl floor in my bathroom with tile. With the right information and tools, I don‘t see why I can‘t do it myself. Any ideas on the pros and cons of different types of tile? What‘s least likely to get scratched, and what is least likely crack and need to be replaced? Which is easiest to clean, etc.? I‘m not crazy about a rough feel or look to the tile. So, I‘m thinking of glazed ceramic or polished stone. Also, my bathroom is very small. I wouldn‘t need to use more than 35-40 square feet of tile. Do you think 12x12 size tiles would look too big? Any tips or suggestions will be appreciated!

Q: Our house has Asbestos floor tiles throughout. (I had them tested, and they definitely contain asbestos.)The dilemma: Currently these tiles are covered with carpet. The carpet is old and ugly and needs to be replaced. We want to replace it with Laminate flooring.I‘m worried about pulling up the carpet tacks at the edges. Is there a safe way to do that? Also, is it safe to put Laminate flooring over asbestos tiles?
This probably isn't going to be cheap but you MUST get the asbestos out of the house asap. The only legal way is to employ a specialist firm to come in and remove it for you as they will have all the right equipment to remove it safely. They will also be licensed to take it away and dispose of it correctly. It's not just a matter of taking it to the local waste disposal site. If they're a reasonable company they may even take your old carpets away for you aswell because if they've been laid directly on top of the tiles there'll definitely be traces of asbestos in the carpets.
Q: I‘m going to install a porcelain tile floor. My question is when I install a tile up against a cabinet that people can see. Should I but the tile up against the cabinet or should I leave enough space to grout between the tile and the cabinet. Just wondering what the standard practice is , and what looks the best. Also I have a small crack in the concrete, which the tile company said it was so minor that not to worry about it. Although it caused a crack in my old tile that was originally installed. I would really like to prep the crack prior to installing the new tile. What would you recommend doing to prep the crack. Thanks
I like to leave a space between the cabinet and tile the same as the groutlines. About the crack. You can grind all the loose stuff off it and fill it with cement or something like that. but I've found that if the crack keeps getting bigger (if the house settles any more) there is nothing you can do except when the tile cracks replace it
Q: I was watching HGTV and they had this tile that was flexible. It looked like alot of small square tile mounted to a flexible backing. Does anyone know the name of these? Thanks
that's many times completed yet, the great yet.....the floor, the winning floor should be great clean. pass to homestead Depot and get a gallon of Armstrong: Latex primer. As I suggested, clean the floor genuine good, make particular there are actually not any dips that are sharp or humps that are sharp. No grains of sand, those will look as though mountains under the hot tile, that's superb to try this in stocking ft. consistently checking for dirt and combing each and all of the time. do no longer placed the hot tile over an identical line yet pass them. earlier you start up, placed an outstanding layer of primer down with a curler and anticipate it to dry thoroughly. If there is areas between the previous tile that are fairly far aside, I even have used a filler to fill those.
Q: I just replaced the riser rail in our electric shower, but the fittings were slightly different, so now I have 2 bare holes in the tiles. Should I be concerned about moisture getting into the wall, and if so what‘s the best way to fill these holes? Would polyfilla be enough?
Since this is now a hole you don t want to use any grout or thin set since these are cement based and will wick water through the hole. Tile caulk which you can get to compliment the tile or grout color is just ok to but I don t suggest these types of caulks. They are silicone and latex based and are water soluble. Best thing to use is a pure silicone caulk. Unless your tiles are white a clear caulk would look the best just to hide the holes . Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: Staining and grout removal aside, are there other disadvantages to using natural stone tile for bathtubs?
Using natural stone in the bath tub is not that advisable. removal of grout and stain is not a problem if the granite is well polished you know. I want to tell about one issue only which I have seen many places. You know if you compare with ceramic tiles, the natural stone is a porous material, I mean there are many invisible holes on it. The effect is that stones will absorb water and it will spread into the foor and it wil make problem if your bath is in the first floor or above. See the problem if you are on a floor above the ground floor, you will see water dripping from the bottom area of the tub. In this case, if you are particular in going with natural stone, you can make it somewhere out side the building with separate foundation.
Q: How to use ordinary drill drill on the tiles to hang things hanging?
Yes, with a special drill (tile needle) is very easy to be able to drill eyes
Q: I was wondering if self stick vinyl tile would work well on bathroom walls and if it would stick well to sheet rock or if i have to replace the sheetrock with plywood?
I think they would peel off eventually due to condensation.
Q: about a year ago i had tile installed on my home but winter is here and i was wondering if i could get carpet installed over the tile without getting the tile damage
Aside from a large area rug something will have to give. Wall to wall need to be either glued or a tack strip on the perimeter. Both just about ruining a lot of tile. The large area rug and maybe double sided tape to help hold it in place or a thin mat that is made to hols carpet n place w/o it walking and scooting.. GL
