- Q: I want to put ceramic tile in my dining room, my room is 12' x 11'. So how would I go about deciding how many tiles I would need? The tiles are 12x12. But for ceramic tiles dont you have to leave space in between them?
- You will need 132 tiles-get a few extra in case of breakage.I would go with 1/4 space or less. They sell 1/8th inch spacers-less grout to use and less sealer.
- Q: I am going to be removing ceramic tile in my kitchen and was wondering what the easiest way to go about it was? I was going to use a hammer and a flat ended screw driver, what do you think?
- the thing i have found about removing tiles is that you i am never able to remove them without breaking them so i think just go with your insticnts and get the hammer and chizzel to it.
- Q: I need tips on how to install tiles around bathroom walls. I have the walls up and taped. Now what??? I leveled and drew a line under the window cell horizontal and vertical. 1) Do I start tiling from the tub up?2) How do I seal - or do I have to seal the tiles (Ceramic tiles 4x4)?3) What type of sealer should I use? Please give me a name that I can easily find @HD or loews.
- You should start from the tub up. so you have a nice finished edge where it meets the tub. You start from the center of the long wall so that the cuts on each end are the same. On the short walls you start from the outside so that once agin you have a clean factory edge. Normally you don't have to seal bathroom tiles they have a gloss finish, right? You do have to grout them however, the tiling department at Home Depot will have a few choices, in many colours. Pick one that matches your tiling job, and the paint colour. Read the grouting instructions a couple of times. Be careful when mixing grout, a little water at a time!
- Q: the kitchen is pretty spacious, but is it possible to put tiles on top of wood?
- I had the same cocern when I was remodeling my kitchen. I had a linoleum floor and wanted to change to tiles. I ripped out my old linoleum floor only because I wanted to keep the increase of the new flooring to a min. Everybody I taked to suggested to use backerboard over your sub floor if you want your new floor to last. Use 1/4 if you subfloor is relativley stable, 1/2 backerboard if not. But remember the difference in height of your new floor with the thickness of the backer board and tiles.
- Q: we had our bathroom redone, it looks great but the guy that did it got some grout on one of the decorative tiles, where it shouldn‘t be. Is there a way to get the grout off ?
- First if your unhappy the tile man should be called to do this. But if you feel you can do it yourself there are a couple ways to do it. If it happens to be a raised or relief style deco use a pc of wood. A small dowel sharpened to a dull point can be used to gently dig out the grout. If its a flat deco tile, scrape off excess with a flat pc of wood or plastic. Never use metal since it can leave a permanent mark on tiles. Fine hazes you can start with a dry rag and work up to a white nylon pad scrub with. When doing a rag or nylon pad do this dry, no water. Water helps reintroduce the grout to the tile. - Q: I have a basement about 25X25 does anyone know how much it would cost to put vinyl tile down?
- What I did, was pull out the Yellow book, and called, compared prices, and see what they would do. ESPECIALLY, if you mention their competitor down the road, that said he'd install if for cents per square. Best least expensive way, is to go to Home Depot, get the guy in that dept... and see. I had mine professionally done, nothing like it in the world.. but do it yourself, is 'user friendly' today. Love the newer hard wood laminants, and tile ( look real!)... You get what you pay for. Go in the middle, and your are safe for the wear value. That I do know.
- Q: Tile setters? I paid someone to tile my bathroom floor using the 1 in hex tiles meshed together in 12 x 12 in pieces. Ive seen that type of tile done before and it each tile looks evenly spaced. The tiles he installed for me look like they were installed in 12 x 12 pieces as the perimeter of the meshed tiles has much wider grout lines than the interior. He says its normal and it happened because the floor is uneven but he installed the hardybacker himself so he should have leveled it.
- Plain and simple, the guy did not do a good job. It's rare for anyone to install tiles perfect, if you look at any tile job, and I don't care who did it, you are going to find imperfections, but thats just it, you have to look for them. To just casually look, you should see no problems at all. If you can live with it, get discount on the job your happy with if you hate it, have him rip them up and replace them at his expense If you can afford it and hate them. hire someone else to redo the floor and take the first guy to court in an attempt to recoup your money..if he couldn't do right the first time , I doubt he'll be able to do right if given a second chance.
- Q: i needed some vinyl tile but i saw that vinyl roll was a lot cheaper.is a vinyl roll just vinyl tile that hasnt been cut?
- No it is two completely different things. Vinyl tile is solid vinyl all the way through. Sheet vinyl is a composite of a vinyl wear layer and a base substrate, and many times even having a cushioning layer, so it is a little easier on your feet, sort of a mini anti-fatigue mat. In much the same way as formica has a top wear layer, and a (usually) brown substrate. Vinyl tile is much more durable than sheet goods, you will almost never see sheet goods in a commercial environment, also when damaged, tiles are easier to repair. A tile will gouge or scratch, where as sheet vinyl will tear when heavy appliances are dragged over it. The sheet goods DO give you some cushioning, this is because of the composite backing.
- Q: I just finished grouting my tile yesterday I want to remove the haze with vinager should I let the grout cure for three days,then seal it and then scrub the whole floor including going over the grout lines (which would be then sealed) scrubbing with a sponge and avoiding the non cured grout is working but is taking far too long
- Remove standard grout haze, any time now with a dry rag. I prefer an old towel or hand towel. More stubborn haze or a rougher textured tile I prefer a white nylon pad. Sold most any where tile and tile supplies are sold. Buff using the nylon pad. Do this also dry. By doing it wet with water or a vinegar/water solution you reintroduce grout onto the tile by using the dirty water. You ll have to do it more to get the haze off. Don t seal grout until all haze is removed or the sealer will be sucked into the haze and that gets sealed onto the tile. use a penetrating sealer 3 days after tile was grouted.
