- Q: do I have to blow insulation in the roof of my mobile home if I install foam insulation under a meatle roof?
- Vapor barriers always go on the heated side of walls or ceilings. If you are going to add insulation to your attic and don't want to put in more blown in insulation ( which does have a better R-factor) then purchase unfaced fiberglass insulation to put on top of existing insulation. The thing you need to avoid is called double vapor barriers. Years ago when the first started playing with super insulated houses they would put a poly on the inside and outside of the walls. What happened is any moisture picked up in the walls going from summer to winter would get trapped in the walls and rot them out. No matter what only one vapor barrier on the heated side of the insulation!!! Then your house can breath and release moisture regardless how thick your walls or ceiling.
- Q: How do I find roofers who are specialised in protection against invaders from outer space. I called 10 and they said they would call me back, but no one did so far. It must be really complicated.
- yes it does, only if aliens truly existed have you ever stopped to think that some of these strange flying objects maybe be a VERY TOP SECRET military project, the goverment might be paying millions to the media and people so that they assume its from outer space so that their projects remain secret
- Q: I'm thinking of converting my brick walled corrugated iron shed into a changing room for winter hot tub use. I was advised by a friend that the first thing i should do is insulate the roof using glass fibre insulation (the yellow fluffy stuff in the loft) and a simple Plywood ceiling but im not sure how i would stick it to the existing roof (dimensions 170cm x 147cm). So..... how should i insulate the roof of my future changing room????
- If the roof has joists, which I imagine it would, you would put the bats of insulation into those spaces... these can then be stapled into place or if that isn't possible, you can run a wire between the joists to hold the bats in place. If using faced insulation be sure to put the paper side towards the warm area (inside) to prevent condensation.
- Q: what effect does changing the pitch of a roof have on the insulation properties and durability of a roof?
- by raising the pitch the attic will stay in the cooler in the summer. also the steeper the roof the less wear you will have on certain types of roofing. wood, metal , and tile like steep roofs. mineral roofs dont, since the grainuals on the tar rub off easily during rains and snow will stick to the mineral surface and rip off the grainuals on the steeper roofs. a good pitch is a 6 and 12 pitch. this works well with all roofs and gives good cooling plus you can still stand on it to door any work
- Q: Without loft insulation ,the roof space is full of air.Why does this not keep the heat in?
- The warm air that collects in the attic is in close contact with the roof, heat is conducted through the roof and lost to the atmosphere.
- Q: House is a bi-level. Recently added storm windows to deck off dining room. Having a new rubber roof installed would like to know if we can insulate ceiling to make the room warmer. What product do you suggest we use. we are getting conflicting answers, some say you can insulate others say the ceiling needs to breath having a rubber roof install. Please advise.
- Your other answerer is correct. The little plastic pieces that he speaks of are sometimes called baffles. They look like they are corregated or wavy like the inside of cardboard. These are essential to letting air flow in the attic space. Another item that you must have are vents on the soffits or overhangs on either side of the roof. Air has to get in there somehow. There are alot of homes that are not ventilated properly and the roof decking or plywood gets discolored and rots from the inside out. Sometimes this can happen in as little as 5 years, depending on your geographical location. Rubber roofing is usually put on a flat roof system. If you do not have access to inside the framing, you cannot insulate or it will be very difficult to get insulation in there properly. There are so many variables with different houses and locations. You may want to ask an insulation expert from the phone book or even a home inspector. Good luck.
- Q: The attic was converted into two rooms and I want to add insulation but the space between the ceiling of the rooms and the roof is about 5 inches? How should I do this?
- u can buy blow in insulation. I think Home Depot even lets you rent the blower machine free if you buy a certain amount of bags of the insulation.
- Q: Finally remembering to do so, before my family and I left the house for approximately 4 hours, I turned off the heat before leaving. When we came home I turned it back on, but was shocked to see that the temperature had dropped 4 degrees in that time. 4 degrees in just under 4 hours seems like a lot of heat loss, does it not? I've seen the insulation in our roof and it's just that sawdust looking stuff spread everywhere. I feel like I'm paying a lot of unnecessary dollars for heating: the air does kick on every hour or two and we keep the thermostat at 68.Is it reasonable for me to talk to my landlord about this problem and getting better insulation in the ceiling, and maybe in the roof? (the master bedroom, on the far corner of the house, is always 2-3 degrees below the rest of the house). Are my expectations to not lose a degree of heat or more per hour unreasonable? Would a typical landlord consider this a problem worth discussing?
- The roof (assume pitched) doesn't need insulating it's above the attic above the ceilings of all the rooms that need 12 inch of mineral wool insulation to stop heat loss (you may have less thickness not all insulation is to the correct standards) Also if as I suspect the walls of your home are timber with shiplap (and not solid brick / cavity walls) they also require insulation top up. From a google search there is state wide Government grants for insulating homes, could be available in your state? using blown insulation to walls/ceilings. If you decide to install it yourself the payback is excellent -in 12 months depending on fuel cost and what existing insulation (from your description minimal) The landlord could be entitled to increase your lease costs if he takes the work on as he has greatly improved the thermal insulation which will reduce your heating costs and make his property more valuable to lease.
- Q: we want to put a model railway up in the loft, and i like the idea of having white plastic cladding throughout up there,my hubby is insulating the roof tomorrow, but he prefers plasterboard,at least the cladding will be maintenance free,
- i think it might be able to pass code if you ever sell the house.i myself would use sheets of white wainscoting.also make sure the insulation if it has a paper backing ,paper faces the room.
- Q: What are the roof insulation materials?
- Compared with EPS sheet, XPS board is made of polystyrene resin and other additives by extrusion process has a continuous uniform surface and closed-cell honeycomb structure of the plate, the closed-cell structure of the insulation material can have different The pressure (150-500Kpa) also has the same low thermal conductivity
