- Q: i used to have wooden windows but now i have plastic windows and im just wondering if the air conditioners would still work on plastic windows since you cant drill holes into them.
- You'll just need to find another way to mount the AC, like attaching a bracket to the wall instead of the window frame. Make sure you screw into the studs and not just the sheetrock.
- Q: The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
- You don't have to do this, but it will be easier for the city recycling center to recycle it. Yes, you can put the plastic window part into the plastic recycling bin. :D

- You can use indoor plastic kits. They contain sheets of plastic film, which looks like cling-film, but is slightly thicker. The kit also comes with double-sided tape, and you use this to tape the wooden framing (around the window pane). You then cut out the plastic to fit the size of your window frame and fix it to the tape. Finally, you blow a hair dryer on the plastic, which shrinks it so that it is very tight.
- Q: Ok, I just moved in to my own apartment this past Spring, and it's an older duplex (with a lot of friggin windows-31 to be specific). So trying to keep the heat in this winter is a huge issue. I've heard of covering the windows with plastic to help, but I'm also looking at thermal shades (window quilts, etc.). My question would be which of these would keep more heat in? Or should I do both? (I would make my own if doing the quilts...so if anybody has any links to a really easy way to make them that would be very much appreciated as well! ) Money is tight, so I'm trying to avoid the problem to begin with..
- I've had the same problem before. This is what I would do....I would do the plastic (There is some that you can use a hair dryer on to tighten up so it looks better and doesn't blow around). Once that is done I would do the quilts/blankets to be a bit more insulating. You could just tack them up inside the window frame or if you have curtain rods is even better. - Have you called the parts department at your Ford dealer? When I worked at Ford in the 80s I believe you could order them as a separate part.
- Q: My windows seem to be extra drafty this year... It seems like one of them is open, but I can't find anything wrong with them. Anyhow, my heat is kicking on like every 15 minutes! - I have the same problem . My windows are recessed on the inside of the house so I bought a 1/2 inch thick piece of smooth styrofoam at Lowe's and covered from the inside. It's a little dark in the room but it works great. You can also find heavy gauge clear vinyl at Lowe's or a fabric store and just tape it over the window from the inside. Vinyl works better than regular plastic because it's thicker.
- Q: and where can i get it? I remember my dad did this to our windows growing up and it was like shrink wrap for them and he had to use a hairdryer....any ideas where i can get it and does it work?
- Frost KIng and 3M make these window film treatments that you are talking about...You can buy either one at a home depot/Lowes/Menards /Ace Hardware or True Value. YOu are correct ...Use a home hair dryer after apllying the film to a clean perimeter of the insde window and it will shrink to a drum tight and air tight enclsoure. Come spring time you simply need to peel it off and you are back to the summer mode...HOwever you will have to re purchase again for next winter..But for the price you get a lot of value...The 3M is by far the superior product due to the adhesives used on the border and the mil thickness of the palstic...Of o =course you pay more as well ..
- Q: I don't know what they mean by 'apply tape to bottom of protruding sill.' I have a sill, do they mean on the surface of it, or below the sill on the wall, or should i just put the tape around the window and apply the plastic, just not sure how to handle the sill...thanks...
- Having used this stuff myself, I've learned that the weak point in the system is the adhesive strength of the tape. Since the plastic will be stretched, it will be pulling constantly against the tape, so having the plastic go around edges before taping helps to reduce the force against the tape. In other words, instead of putting the tape along the inside edges of the molding, or even on the face, I wrap the plastic across the face of the molding and attach the tape along the outside edges of the molding, where it meets the wall. With the plastic going around a 90-degree bend, it helps relieve stress on that adhesive. At the sill, I put the tape on the bottom of the sill -- not the face of it, but the underside. That's what has worked best for me. The tape holds, and the plastic stays in place.
- Q: So I have a 88 celica convertible and the back window is made out of plastic can not see anything out of it. I replaced it a few years back havent driven it in a while now you cant see out of it. Is there something out there I can use to clear it up?
- There are products available for exactly your problem. Search an auto parts retail website. It serves to clean and protect the plastic, and the result is usually decent.
- Q: Can a 1992 convertible Mazda Miata plastic window be replaced with a later model glass one?
- I need to replace my 1993 Mazda Miata soft top with plastic rear window to a soft top with a glass window. If a soft top with a glass window is installed, how would the top fold down considering there is glass window or will you ever be able to fold the soft top? A plastic window can easily easily but I don't see how it would. Thanks.
