- Q:Most of the windows in our home are pretty drafty. We've been putting up the thin, shrink with a hair dryer Duck plastic in our windows for winter to help with the drafts. I want to make some window quilts for this winter to help, but I'm not sure how to combine them with the plastic, or if we should just use them with out the plastic. Would it be more effective to plastic right around the window, inside of the frame, and then hang the quilt right on top of the plastic, or hang the quilt outside the frame, or just hang the quilt directly on the window with out the plastic?
- At the home improvement store there is weather stripping that can help. Also caulking the windows. I'd make the quilts to cover the window with a little fullness to cover the frame. Hope this is helpful..Roxanne
- Q:So I have a 88 celica convertible and the back window is made out of plastic can not see anything out of it. I replaced it a few years back havent driven it in a while now you cant see out of it. Is there something out there I can use to clear it up?
- There are products available for exactly your problem. Search an auto parts retail website. It serves to clean and protect the plastic, and the result is usually decent.
- Q:I don't know what they mean by 'apply tape to bottom of protruding sill.' I have a sill, do they mean on the surface of it, or below the sill on the wall, or should i just put the tape around the window and apply the plastic, just not sure how to handle the sill...thanks...
- Having used this stuff myself, I've learned that the weak point in the system is the adhesive strength of the tape. Since the plastic will be stretched, it will be pulling constantly against the tape, so having the plastic go around edges before taping helps to reduce the force against the tape. In other words, instead of putting the tape along the inside edges of the molding, or even on the face, I wrap the plastic across the face of the molding and attach the tape along the outside edges of the molding, where it meets the wall. With the plastic going around a 90-degree bend, it helps relieve stress on that adhesive. At the sill, I put the tape on the bottom of the sill -- not the face of it, but the underside. That's what has worked best for me. The tape holds, and the plastic stays in place.
- Q:There have been news reports that broken glass is falling from condo apartments. They are coming from glass window installments. I want to know if condo buildings ever build their windows with plastic.
- Perhaps some would and others would not. Each builder would build a building according to the specifications of the owner and developer. If the plans call for glass normally glass would be used, on the other hand if the plans called for plastic then plastic would be used. Some cities require a certain material to be used in building a building prior to the issuance of a building permit. Some cities require energy efficient windows, therefore the deciding factor as to the type building material has bee determined by the city or county who issue the building permit. - Q:is the space between the glass and the window seal important
- I've lived in a few rentals where we had to weatherstrip the windows, and at no time did it ever occur to me that the landlord should pay for it. Weatherstripping is just part of living life in a colder climate. You don't need to pay outrageous amounts for expensive weatherstripping products. If the gap is an inch or two at the top of your window, just roll up some old towels or cleaning rags to fit into the gap. They'll stop the wind just as well as some plastic product you have to pay for at the hardware store, and your curtains or blinds will cover them anyway, so you don't have to care if it doesn't look too good. If the windows have an actual structural problem, though, so that they really can't be closed tightly enough to lock, you might try to convince the landlord to have repairs done based on the fact that they're a security hazard. (Yeah, I know, nobody's likely to break in to an attic, but you can at least try.)

I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
- If your city requires you to separate plastic from paper, then separate them, but my city just gives you one recycle bin, so all the recyclables go in one bin, it's easier for us, harder for our city.

- Plastic expands and contracts too much to have tint put on. It will wrinkle up. That goes for hard plastics (plexiglas type) also.

- not much, it is primarily used to reflect the sunlight to keep the house cooler in the summer

- Duct tape is not worth the paper the bill is printed on. Try to keep it in a garage or put a tarp over it until Wednesday.
