Q: I have yucky shades on my windows dead bugs all around my windows. They are old windows so I bought an insulation kit to do the windows. It says I will need to blow dry. What if I don't want to touch the disgusting shades my landlord said be would replace when I moved in ? I am kind of stuck living here so until I can find a place a roommate, I want to seal the windows. shades completely. They have poor insulation a handful bugs come in every hour.Do you think the plastic will work without shrinking it with a blowdryer? There are slice webs around my window so I am disgusted.
Actually you can go with this approach, but you must ask an expert before applying anything. Your windows will look great, and they will be highly protective after applying plastic on them. But be careful and do it properly.
Q: I need to put plastic on my windows for the winter. It never looks right, and they always pop off during stormy cold winter weather. Any advice?
the shrink plastic works well, but you need super clean, smooth and grease free woodwork to adhere the double sided tape. it does not stick well to bare wood, so you might first have to paint a line of varnish or poly where the tape will go (and let it dry, of course). My 20's bungalow has Original windows, and until I can get some outside storms made, I'm using the shrink wrap. You're only trying to trap a layer of still air between the the outside glass and the room. Caulking around all the window and floor wood work will go a long way to improve the Comfort level of rooms, too.
Q: on a bmw ragtop
You can purchase 'window tint' that comes in rolls and at several shades from your local auto parts store or detail shop.
Q: My windows seem to be extra drafty this year... It seems like one of them is open, but I can't find anything wrong with them. Anyhow, my heat is kicking on like every 15 minutes! I don't wanna get a $300 gas bill every month till winter is over... I'm thinking about putting plastic up on the windows --- How do I do this? What do I use?It seems so ghetto, but oh well.I live in an apartment building too btw..
Try using the insulating strips first. I put these in my windows and it seem to help a lot. You just put them where the window hits the sill when it closes. If it doesn't help you can always add on the plastic. Also put insulating foam in your outlets and switch plates that are on an outside wall. These are dirt cheap and cut to fit right in the outlet.
Q: I rent a townhouse that has very old windows.. LL will not replace them so im thinking of puttng plastic over the wndows.. we are not aloud to put plastic outside.,. Can anyone tell me..should it be thick plastic? should i staple it? or just tape? when i lay on my bed or couch i can feel the draft and the curtans move.. these wndows are terrible!! any help on the whole insulating thing would be great.. i hate having my heat on 78 just to be somewhat warm cause all the cold ar is still blowng in.. for some reason the heating vents are close to the wndows.. defeats the purpose if you ask me..
Alot of times the problem is the insulation around the window jamb. Remove the casing carefully and inspect the insulation. I suspect there is little or no insulation between the window and framework. Buy some spray foam and fill the void. Be care full not to get it on your hands. Replace the casing and check for drafts. If you still have drafts you can buy a window insulator kit. It comes with a light plastic film and double sided tape. Apply tape around casing and stretch film over as tight as you can without ripping the plastic. You can then use a blow dryer to shrink the plastic tight. This will allow you to still look out your window clearly. Your cost to fix each window should be around five bucks.
Q: and where can i get it? I remember my dad did this to our windows growing up and it was like shrink wrap for them and he had to use a hairdryer....any ideas where i can get it and does it work?
Frost KIng and 3M make these window film treatments that you are talking about...You can buy either one at a home depot/Lowes/Menards /Ace Hardware or True Value. YOu are correct ...Use a home hair dryer after apllying the film to a clean perimeter of the insde window and it will shrink to a drum tight and air tight enclsoure. Come spring time you simply need to peel it off and you are back to the summer mode...HOwever you will have to re purchase again for next winter..But for the price you get a lot of value...The 3M is by far the superior product due to the adhesives used on the border and the mil thickness of the palstic...Of o =course you pay more as well ..
Q: What is the U value of the heat shrink plastic window film?
not much, it is primarily used to reflect the sunlight to keep the house cooler in the summer
Q: what do i do to make the plastic thats supposed to keep the chill out on the windows stay on. it keeps falling down? i followed the directions. now what?
the 2-sided tape isn't adhering very well. Make sure the wood you attach it to is washed and dry, and apply fresh tape.
Q: i got mad and threw something a my widow and one panel broke so how do i reinforce that otherpanel
no, but plixeglass will do it.
Q: I have tried the heating up shrink wrap and the double sided sticky tape won't hold on my wall. So I bought a thick layer of plastic and tried to hold it up with tacks and just duct tape around it. The duct tape also comes peeling of my walls. Is there some kind of tape/glue that can hold this plastic up and not peel off my walls?
If the walls are dirty, or painted with flat sheen paint, no tape will stick
