FAQ

Q:I would like to completely remove it off of the car without removing the whole top? (The zipper broke)
Well can you bust the zipper itself, so you can manually pull on the plastic and undo the zipper? You could use a pair of pliers, and a flat screw driver to break apart the zipper, if it is jammed. Just be careful not to damage the car side, if you buy a replacement.
Q:what is the difference between acrylic and plastic window vent visors ?
Plastic is a generic term that can apply to many different materials. Acrylic is a specific type of plastic. That said, there are many types of acrylics as well. A common acrylic used in automotive applications would be polymethyl methacrylate, also know under the trade name Plexiglas. Polycarbonates are also commonly used and are sometimes referred to as acrylics but technically they are not acrylics at all. In this application I'd probably prefer a polycarbonate as it would be more durable and less likely to craze with repeated washing. Something sold as acrylic would come second and anything generically referred to as plastic a distant third place.
Q:does tapeing plastic over windows help very much in winter?
It does help somewhat. When you seal a window like that, you're creating an area of dead air (non-circulating) which does help slow down heat transfer. It's like the pockets of air in an insulated jacket or in fiberglass insulation. It also seals up any gaps and leaks in the window itself. I find that to really reduce the heat loss through a window, I use plastic on the inside and the outside and use a heavy material as a curtain. Between the three, I don't feel the chill from around the windows. @Boy Boy - That's what my Central Heating system is designed to do. It has an air-exchanger that trades the stale inside air with the outside air AND has a heat exchanger to take the heat from the air going out to pre-warm the heat coming in to the house. Even without that, homes leak enough air to not develop mold. We're not talking making a hermetic seal here. Every time the doors open you get a significant air exchange. And that's not even mentioning all the office and commercial buildings that do not have windows that open. They have sealed, double and sometimes triple pane windows filled with inert gases. They don't get mold. Mold in the winter develops on areas where condensation on the walls forms. And if you have condensation forming in the house on an exterior wall, then there is usually a lack or a failure of the insulation in that area that needs to be addressed. Before you call someone an idiot, make sure that they're actually doing something idiotic.
Q:Is it ok to recycle these envelops with other white office paper? Or do they belong to the garbage bin?
I asked our recycling guy a year ago, and he said it's just fine to leave the windows in.
Q:There is a tear in my drivers side window at the bottom where the plastic is covered by the fabric, but the fabric is coming lose and the tear is starting to show and open itself to elements. Also, this window zipper only closes and opens one way, going the other way the teeth will not connect, any ideas? Also, there is a larger 4-5 inch tear in my rear plastic window right under where the zipper releases the plastic from the fabric. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
They have replacement windows and doors at very affordable prices and will ship them to you.
Q:I don't know what they mean by 'apply tape to bottom of protruding sill.' I have a sill, do they mean on the surface of it, or below the sill on the wall, or should i just put the tape around the window and apply the plastic, just not sure how to handle the sill...thanks...
Having used this stuff myself, I've learned that the weak point in the system is the adhesive strength of the tape. Since the plastic will be stretched, it will be pulling constantly against the tape, so having the plastic go around edges before taping helps to reduce the force against the tape. In other words, instead of putting the tape along the inside edges of the molding, or even on the face, I wrap the plastic across the face of the molding and attach the tape along the outside edges of the molding, where it meets the wall. With the plastic going around a 90-degree bend, it helps relieve stress on that adhesive. At the sill, I put the tape on the bottom of the sill -- not the face of it, but the underside. That's what has worked best for me. The tape holds, and the plastic stays in place.
Q:The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?
most authorities in the UK have a quoter or lee way of non recyclables allowed into each category i.e. paper, plastic, compostables, tin, aluminium, glass, natural fabrics. In my council borough they will not empty if they see something within the contents of the bin that isn't within that separate category. In our local paper a lady had accidentally put the inner tube of a loo roll in her glass bin and they refused to take it and they also sent her a severe letter threating legal action if she did it again, she was 88 so i suppose she should have known better at her age! but anyway the more you separate the better for the environment. as for the plastic window i don't know but if you do find out can you tell me to.
Q:replace car door windows with plastic windows.how much and where.
depends where in the world you are, what car you have and are you doing it yourself
Q:and where can i get it? I remember my dad did this to our windows growing up and it was like shrink wrap for them and he had to use a hairdryer....any ideas where i can get it and does it work?
Frost KIng and 3M make these window film treatments that you are talking about...You can buy either one at a home depot/Lowes/Menards /Ace Hardware or True Value. YOu are correct ...Use a home hair dryer after apllying the film to a clean perimeter of the insde window and it will shrink to a drum tight and air tight enclsoure. Come spring time you simply need to peel it off and you are back to the summer mode...HOwever you will have to re purchase again for next winter..But for the price you get a lot of value...The 3M is by far the superior product due to the adhesives used on the border and the mil thickness of the palstic...Of o =course you pay more as well ..
Q:So I drunkenly put my elbow through my friend's passenger window in his jeep wrangler..he's pissed and is demanding $200 for its replacement or he's pressing charges. Yeah, nice friend. 200 dollars sounds like an astronomical amount for a piece of plastic that zips onto your car. Am I getting ripped off?
You're not getting ripped off... those things are surprisingly expensive.
