The more texture, the better it will hide traffic wear. Try to find something with multi color flecks, it will help to hide stains. No matter what carpet you choose pets can cause a lot of damage to it. Especially if they track in dirt and mud or if they pee or vomit on the carpet. Since you already have hardwood floors you might want to buy carpet and have it turned into an area rug. The flooring store where you buy it should be able to arrange for the carpet to be bound ( having a cloth strip stiched around the edges), and get you a protective underlayment to put between the hardwood and the rug. You can have the rug made to any shape and size you want. Since you won't have to pay for installation you save some money, you won't damage your wood floors and it'll be easier to change in the future.
