Q: I just bought a new laptop today, Dell Inspiron. It is currently charging for the first time. I picked up the charger and it was super hot, like stove hot! I mean I was busy on it transfering my files from my old computer but that shouldn't have overheated it, if anything the laptop would be overheated. I would make sure the transformer in the charger can handle at least 20 Amps and then it will never fail. Well maybe if the battery is almost flat. The higher the current that you need to charge the battery the higher the rated current of your transformer. If you draw more Amps than the transformer is rated for it will overhead and the transformer will fail. I make sure that there is always plenty extra power available and then it lasts for years.

The charger must be capable of much higher output current than a normal charger. The charging circuitry in the device (phone) must also be designed to provide fast charging, and since it, rather than the power supply, ultimately determines the charging current, using a 1.2A charger in place of a 700mA charger will probably make no difference at all in the rate at which your phone charges its battery. No damage should occur.
