- depends if it fits and whether it's polarity is the right way round not to mention the volts has to be about right plus if it needs a central pin or not(in the bit you push in) if it needs a pin and doesnt have one then it will like as not fail to charge. be careful if it is incorrect polarity it will go bang. and be rendered useless the laptop that is

I plugged in my laptop to another charger, which does not have same specifications though, my laptop turned on, though with (plugged in, not charging) showing in the taskbar, and laptop's funtions were normal. - Those battery packs are meant to be used. The worst thing your grandfather could have done was to have it plugged in 24/7. I take mine off the charger at least a few times a month to let the battery drain off so it can get a fresh charge. At this point I'd look into replacing both battery and charger.
