- Q: Is a hand drill suitable for drilling internal walls? (plasterboard)?
- A hand drill should work fine for wallboard internally but as another poster indicated, you should be aware of wiring or plumbing behind the wall. You can also use a sharp or semi-sharp object to punch holes in hollow walls to add screw anchors to hang pictures and shelves, etc. I've used awls, nailsets and even a philips screw driver to do this.
- Q: What distance do the dry wall screws have to be and what do i fill the joint gaps with before plastering. Is there a british standard ?
- I would nail it with sheetrock nails.......but if you are pounding on someone else's half of the wall I would use sheet rock screws. You can put one in about every 8 across a stud. Try not to break the paper. For the joints instead of paper tape I use fiberglass self sticking tape.........it's usually blue or yellow and mud right over it. If you are going to plaster it well that's the same tape but a little different application of the mud. I just hand texture the mud and do a knock down trowel finish.......it looks nice.......and is fairly simple to do.

- Q: I have recently put up some plasterboard (or gyproc) in my kitchen and need to seal it (as it's behind a sink and a cooker). I have bought a tub of PVA, but there are no instructions on the back for what ratio to mix it to apply to the gyproc to waterproof it... Any ideas?
- You can buy waterproof boards for putting in showers. But for usual plasterboards.. are you plastering on the boards of tiling straight on top? If you are tiling, you probably dont need to seal it. Though a weak mix of pva may be good to put on. 50/50 or a bit less. If its undiluted it will set too thick and shiny for tile adhesive or plaster to stick to.

- Q: I'm renovating a 110year old end terrace. Plaster is all off right back to brick and I'm re plastering myself when the time comes. I took a professional quote and the contractor said that for the external facing walls, because I've stripped it all back, I'd need to use insulated plasterboard to conform to building regs??? Is this true? If so what is the minimum standard?
- Only your local code enforcement officer can answer your question properly. Any other answer is just a guess.

- plasterboard adhesive is easy and quick. Don't batten the brick and fix to that - more work and time and more thickness.
