- Q: So, I accidently flooded my bath. The skirting boards around the sink and wood that boxes around the sink have become damp which has now dried out but the wood has cracked and I suppose that it's become warped. Now, I'm not sure how to deal with this as this wood is attached to the plasterboard wall. By removing this wood and replacing it I fear that I might damage the plasterboard wall.Any advice on how to tackle this? I kind of want some advice before I look into calling someone out
- Those skirting boards as you call them were originally installed to act as a support for when the plasterers floated out the walls with plaster. You can go ahead and replace whatever is bad with new boards. The plaster will not fall off the wall, when you do this. You are fine! Understand that pre-1978 buildings with plaster have asbestos fibers in them. They are know to cause cancer. You need to specially CONTAIN the area and were special protection when doing this work. DO NOT CONTAMINATE OTHER AREAS OF THE HOUSE.

- Q: I have recently put up some plasterboard (or gyproc) in my kitchen and need to seal it (as it's behind a sink and a cooker). I have bought a tub of PVA, but there are no instructions on the back for what ratio to mix it to apply to the gyproc to waterproof it... Any ideas?
- It really all depends on the level of waterproofing that you require. PVA is a good bonding improver but is not recommended as a waterproofer although it is often used as such. PVA will re-emulsify when it becomes damp, leading to possible delamination problems. SBR is a very similar looking product to PVA, but is more expensive and better for waterproofing applications as it will not re-emulsify once it is fully cured. Alternatively you can go for a full under tile tanking system such as Aquaproof. These systems are designed to be used behind tiles is showers, bathrooms, kitchens in apartment blocks. It may however be a bit over the top for a splash back!

- Q: Gypsum board ceiling can be installed sound what Mody
- You refer to the gypsum board hanging speakers, then to find hanging bars (ceiling of the keel), or additional hanging bars, it is not on the wall!
- Q: I have taken the old tiles off and scraped away the old adhesive, but in the process some of the paper coating (of the plasterboard) has come away in places; 95% of it looks ok but there are a couple spots where the plaster is showing through. Can I just put the adhesive on and use it as a filler too or should I be priming the plasterboard with something before I start putting on the adhesive and tiling ?OR what..I'm not after perfection here but I don't fancy having to re-tile it again in a couple of years because the tiles start falling off.
- If the plaster or dry wall is exposed, its best to either run some paint primer over it to seal it, Or fill it in with some dry wall compound or spackle and then primer it. This is especially true if your using a mastic to reapply tiles. If your using a thin set to apply tiles just a primer is needed to seal the exposed plaster or dry wall.
