Q: Can those JML pull up bars be used on a wall that isn't brick?: there's a video, and it's used on a regular door. reviewers all say it hasn't taken any damage / caused any to their door.

Q: I'm buying a cheap floating shelf for 20 so I can hang it on my bedroom wall (plasterboard). I'm buying it for a new stereo I'm getting , but I don't know how to hang the shelf up. I read somewhere that if you're putting a floating shelf on plasterboard you need to use toggle bolts. Can I just drill the holes in the wall , put wall plugs in , and then screw the shelf in to them. The stereo is a Samsung mini system with two seperate speakers. How can I put it up without a chance of it falling down ?: A shelf is a simple lever. If you have, say, a shelf 10 wide with a 2 vertical bracket, that's got a mechanical advantage of 5 - if you put a 10lb stereo on the edge of the shelf, there's 50lb of force trying to pull the top bolts out. So it depends on the shape of the shelf, the weight of the stereo, how far it is from the wall etc. Most likely it will be OK until you accidentally grab the shelf one day, in which case if you just used wall plugs they will tear out and everything will fall to the floor. If you can, try and get at least one screw into a stud and use toggles for the others.

Q: Is a hand drill suitable for drilling internal walls? (plasterboard)?: A hand drill should work fine for wallboard internally but as another poster indicated, you should be aware of wiring or plumbing behind the wall. You can also use a sharp or semi-sharp object to punch holes in hollow walls to add screw anchors to hang pictures and shelves, etc. I've used awls, nailsets and even a philips screw driver to do this.

Q: I have put my flat screen tv on the wall but now all the wires are hanging down from my tv to my sky box and my xbox etc. I have drilled a hole behind my tv and a hole near the floor so that I can drop the wires through to make it more tidy. I tied the cable to a wire coat hanger to push it though but the cavity is filled with insulation and i cant push the wires through to the bottom. Also there might be joists that I haven't found yet. Does anyone know an easier way of doing this?Thanks: You should install surface mounted wire mold to conceal the wires. It's a violation of the electrical code to run device power cords through a wall so you could not legally run any 120 volt cables that way. You could also be breaching a firewall and a sound barrier, which this may well be because it has insulation in it (this would be true if it is a shared party wall) . If it is an outside wall, you are breaching the vapor barrier and reducing the weather seal on the house, also a poor idea. Also, it's a code violation to run 120 volt cable and low voltage communication cable through the same opening in a concealed partition. The only safe option for concealing the wires in the wall would be to use proper recessed backboxes with correctly supported cable between them -- as it is done when houses are built to accomodate wall mount TV's. There has to be two separate box systems, or a divided box and separated raceways, for the line voltage and low voltage cables. My advice is patch the holes you've made and run divided wiremold with channels for the two different voltages (your building or electrical supply store will have it).

Q: we want to put up hooks to hold the rod for curtains, but aren't sure what screws to use to keep the hooks in place. also, i'm thinking it might be plaster, but what are the options to use to help the screws stay firmly in the wall? the last time i tried this on a wall, the screws ended up coming out of the wall later and it was easy to just pull them out. any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.: Plasterboard and drywall both mean the same thing, so does sheetrock for that matter. Drywall is the term most people use. I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't using plaster to mean the same thing, although it's not, but plaster hasn't been used in the U.S. much for 50 years or more now (maybe since the '30's? I've only seen it in old houses, and one custom builder that was still using it a decade ago.) There are numerous types of screw anchors sold for use in drywall. I think the best is a dry wall anchor that you first drill a hole for, insert, and then tighten a screw into. You can put them anywhere, and they hold pretty good. Other people use toggle bolts, or plastic screw anchors, there's probably other choices too. Hardware stores always have these items in stock.

Q: I've got a heavy bathroom cabinet with mirror to an internal plasterboard wall. I was thinking of using plastic plasterboard plugs, for the two screws that hold the whole cabinet.is this going to be strong enough?: No....It has to be anchored to a wall stud
