- Q: 1. I live on the 14th floor of a 60 year old building. Would I need a moisture barrier?2. I want to glue hardwood to cork underlayment and float the cork underlayment over the concrete. Is this possible or advisable?
- No moisture barrier is needed since your a little bit above grade. What you want to do in question # 2 won t work sorry . Your best off just gluing the engineered flooring directly to the concrete. If your looking for a sound deadening procedure, get a floating engineered wood flooring and up grade the underlayment to a quiet walk or what ever they ll call it for that particular product. - Real wood floors are thick, they can be refinished many times, of course you won't live that long. Engineered wood floors can be refinished a few times, and is all you need. Laminate floors, can not be refinished...When they start looking tacky (8-10 yrs) you replace them or carpet over top. If you are going to keep your house, go for real wood or engineered floors, and before you buy, Ask about the refinishing angle, just to make sure.

- Hardwood flooring would give you the best resale for the money, but is expensive. Hardwood could run anywhere from 3 to 10 dollars per square foot. If it is scratched, it can be sanded and redone later on. Engineered is a hardwood floor, but cannot be refinished in case something happens. Also costs around 2.5 to 4 dollars square foot. Laminate looks a little cheaper, but will hold up better than hardwood or Engineered in the long run. I would suggest the Pergo 30 year warranty. Hardwood has to be nailed down to the floor, Engineered has to be tacked or glued down and laminate is free floating. In the case of the hardwood and engineered, you would have to pull up the ceramic tile. With laminate, you MAY not have to do that. Laminate in stock should cost around 2 to 4 dollars a square foot. A lot of laminate floors now look like the real thing. I suggest you do some window shopping to find out for yourself.
