Q: I am building a new house, and I have two large dogs. The house is a $200k smaller home with very nice appliances, granite counter tops, etc. Anyways, I have two large dogs who have scratched up the hardwood(not terribly) in my condo, so I am thinking about putting in the engineered flooring. I have been to lumber wholesalers, and it isn't really much cheaper than hardwood, but it is my understanding that it is much more durable. It seems to look and feel like hardwood, and I have heard that the engineered floors have come a long way, but I'm paranoid that it's going to look cheap. Would putting in the engineered flooring be a mistake?
I would go with conventional hardwood floors since they can be refinished many times where as the engineered flooring can only be refinished once or twice. Laminate can't be refinished at all and once it is scratched you are stuck with the scratches. My son has engineered flooring in his house and is considering having it refinished. The big concern is the skill of the re-finisher. A little too much sanding and you are through the top lay and into the not so attractive lower plies. As a matter of interest we went through this same set of questions several years ago when we built our current house. We finally chose ceramic tile for the whole first floor. We put down area rugs to make it more attractive and easier to walk in certain areas. We have not found all of the tales about ceramic tile to be true. It is not extra cold, things don't break more easily on the tile and with the area rugs you get plenty of color and they are much easier to either replace or have cleaned.
Q: I bought some Value Grade (aka Cabin, Tavern?) Timberland Engineered Natural Maple click-lock wood flooring at 3/8 thickness that's ready to be installed soon as FLOATING with no glues but with foam underlayment above plywood sub-floor. I am in the process of sorting different lengths of wood planks out and I was wondering what are signs of a wood plank that's NOT usable and needs to be thrown away? Defects at the tongue or groove? Large scar-type scratches underneath the plank or on the surface? Any other tips about cabin/tavern grade? This will be installed as DIY and it is my first time.
Cabin grade is usually rated so because it has more knots and heavy grianing..There usually ( usually) isn t any thing wrong with the tongue or groove... Just the surface look. If you like the knots and graining like this then you ll like the wood. ' Watch for surface pits and nicks on the edges you can t live with. Other than this its just a more rustic look. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Q: I am installing about 1000sf of engineered hardwood flooring, and I would like to use the Bostitch SB-150SX finish stapler that I already own to fasten the flooring. Has anyone attempted using a finish stapler (as opposed to a flooring stapler) to install flooring? Am I making a mistake?
It is best to use a flooring stapler. Bostich makes a stapler that is especially for installing engineered wood. Use the finish nailer would probably it hard for the rows to go together.
Q: I've seen a lot of installations of engineered floors done via gluing down the hardwood or having them float. Can you simply just nail them in? I'm thinking of a doing a self-install in a small bedroom and I don't think I'll be satisfied with floating while gluing is more work that I'm interested in doing. Is there a reason you're not supposed to nail down engineered floors as you would real hardwood, or is it an option?
Engineered wood is very versatile.. It can be glued, made to float or nailed down. It isn t actually a nail its a staple. Standard thickness on most ( not all) engineered wood is 5/16 and 3/8 So you require a special staple gun and staple length according to the manufacture. Rent anywhere tools are rented. As in all fastened wood, a barrier is needed under it , usually just a red rosin paper. Some thicker engineered woods a regular floor gun , using a cleat or staple can be used. With the basic tools and DIY skills, engineered wood is very easy to install. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Q: Structure of multi-layer solid wood floor
There are differences in the rate of science, so that the plate in the state of prestressed. When the utility model is used in winter or in the heating and drying season, the table board releases pressure, so that the deformation of the surface plate and the base plate can be balanced, and the utility model can ensure that the utility model can not be cracked in the environment of geothermal heating. The surface layer of multi-layer solid wood flooring is usually rare wood species of African red sandalwood, red, grey, Shabili Kaya Begonia, European white oak, oak, oak, red sandalwood, zebra wood, black walnut, anadenanthera, balsam, elm and different grades of decorative effect, the development of domestic and foreign selling more than 60 kinds of colors with over 40 kinds of material. Both the 0.6mm and the plane was the best-selling domestic and foreign markets with products, and market demand at home and abroad very much hand scraping and drawing of antique antique series. Multilayer solid wood flooring substrate completely from the masterpiece of science and technology, completely changed the traditional thinking on the floor. It uses a stack of rare and non renewable wood arranged in a crisscross pattern is pressed into the substrate, so that the floor of the "stress" to achieve balance, eliminate the floor "anisotropic", so as to overcome the traditional wood floors easy warping deformation, shrinkage and swelling and other defects. The experts in a variety of natural environment and the state of the geothermal environment test, multi-layer solid wood floor expansion contraction is only solid wood veneer 1/15 ~ 1/20, indicating its stability is very strong. The middle layer part of core plate imported more than 70 years old high-quality timber, veneer, after soaking, cooking, drying and other treatment, the internal stress of wood modification makes the cut after close to zero, thus avoiding the core plate cracking in the process of using problem.
Q: Huali wood flooring material good
According to May 1, 2002, the national wood flooring standard GB/T15306 - 2001 implementation of solid wood flooring grade is divided into: B color palette of this class in high-class solid wood flooring. It exhibits a natural wood texture and color pattern, to give natural, soft, rich affinity texture, also because it is warm in winter and cool in summer, feel good. It is an ideal material of the bedroom, living room, study room decoration.
Q: How to distinguish the quality of solid wood flooring and wood
Solid wood flooring is a natural wood after drying, processing of the formation of ground decorative materials. It exhibits a natural wood texture and color pattern, to give natural, soft, rich affinity texture, and it cool, good feeling makes it an ideal material for the bedroom, living room, room decoration. But the solid wood flooring on the higher requirements, once the pavement is not good, will cause a series of problems, such as a sound, etc.. If the indoor environment is too wet or dry, solid wood floors easy to arch, warping or deformation. After the road is good to wax, oil, or the surface of the floor will soon disappear luster
Q: What kind of material is better in the north?
Note: the optional floor is not the harder the better, because the more hard texture, the feeling is not good, and lost itself wood sound absorption and moisture resistance etc.. Some businesses often use some metal objects carved floor, the floor is not damaged as well, this is just a business promotional gimmick. We know the most simple truth: the wood must be afraid of iron (two of the molecular structure is not the same), and not afraid of the floor of the iron is not necessarily a pure wood products. I hope you will not be misled by the advertising business. To know the statistics on the floor of the complaints, 100 complaints, because the problem is not even wear a very simple reason...... Who will go to his home wearing high-heeled shoes at random? Or hit the floor with a metal object?. So the real problem is that the floor cracks, deformation, etc..
Q: I have engineered wood flooring glued to a slab on grade sub floor. We want to remove this and install a thin profile (that is rated and acceptable for concrete sub floor installation) hardwood flooring. However, the cost and hassle to remove the existing engineered wood flooring is more than the new hardwood itself. Could I simply add an additional layer of plywood on top of the existing engineered hardwood (to get the correct height for nails) and treat this as my sub floor, ready for new installation?
How old is the building your living in. That could give you a clue if they are hardwood. If the building is 50 years old or more then it's a good chance that they are hardwood. You can buy hardwood flooring cleaner at Home Depot. Check out the seams where the flooring butts together. If you are able to visibly see and or slide something very thin into the seam like a razor blade then it's hardwood if not then it's most likely laminate.
Q: Solid wood flooring installation needs a wooden keel, according to the traditional method, the fixed wooden keel to hammer drilling, a cork in the drilled holes, and nail fixed wooden keel, the biggest drawback of this method is the hammer drilling, hit the cement floor of the pipes and wires. If there is, and can be mixed with cement, there is an advantage of building rubber powder, that is, in the case of large errors in the floor, wooden keel can be mixed with cement on the leveling. Thank you for your help.
Nail base panel on wooden frame. The base panel can use wood splint or thick thick, and the splint edge and slats end all the needle in the wooden frame on line.(4) according to the size of each floor and the size of the room to determine the floor puzzle and play the line, usually in good format, herringbone pattern, ladder type, etc..
