Q: What is the difference between laminate flooring and solid wood flooring
Daniel, the foot feels comfortable, mainly affected by the price of wood. In the maintenance, a little more than the need to strengthen the floor, such as: solid wood flooring needs regular waxing, and in the use of the process should pay attention to scratches and other small problems. The general wood floor price of 200 yuan / square meters -500 yuan / square meters range, some expensive or even thousands of yuan a square. Solid wood flooring is more suitable for bedroom, study, children, the elderly room decoration.
Q: I want to put down a new engineered wood floor on top of an old wood floor. The problem is that in one larger room the old floor is bowed and needs levelling: the difference between the middle of the floor and the edges is as much as 2cm. Pulling up the old boards is not a solution, as the problem originates with the beams (it's the top floor of a Victorian house). What is the best way to level the floor?
Since you know the high spot is in the middle, use a self leveling compound. Pour it around the perimeter to get a level floor. Use a primer ( special latex primer) to get the compound to bond to the wood.. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL
Q: In flooring, which is better: solid hardwood or engineered hardwood?
Both solid and engineered hardwood floors are mostly available in pre-finished wherein they can be with aluminum oxide which makes it harder to scratch than those finished on site. VOC's (volatile organic compounds) are usually pretty safe on both, lest it wouldn't be acceptable with the US standards. Solid wood floor's advantage is that it can be re-sanded and refinished for many generations to come because of its' thickness. They are typically nailed down (except for thinner ones which have the option of being glued- down). Solid wood floors also contract and expand normally with temp and humidity changes. Engineered wood floors however have a thin layer of the real wood on top of 3-7 cross-grained plys of wood core. It's advantage is that it is less affected by humidity and temperature. They can be installed below, grade, on-grade, and above-grade. This kind of floor also has more options for installation - can be nailed/stapled, glued, or floated, and to any kind of subfloor. You can choose to opt for which one you think will work best with your needs:)
Q: Which is the best between engineered hardwood floors and natural hardwood floors?
I prefer solid real hardwood flooring. In my opinion the finish on site solid floors look the best when completed.
Q: I heard that engineered wood floor designed to provide greater sability, particularly where moisture or heat pose problems for solid hardwood floor. It means engineered wood floor has water-resistant ?
No, not necessarily. Spills still need to be cleaned up quickly. The surface is water repellant, but the joints between the boards are still vulnerable.
Q: I am thinking about putting down about 500 sq ft of Engineered Wood Flooring instead of Laminate. To keep it quiet for the neighbors below, I am thinking about using a cork underlayment. Since this install will be on the 2nd floor, do I still need to use a moisture barrier under the cork? Also, do I have to glue the cork down? I would rather not- the floor might be gypcrete which might not like glue. I am planning to float the floor using a click lock system. This is my first time so any other suggestions would be appreciated e.g., type of species to use, tips, etc.
You will not need to add a moisture barrier. You do not need to glue down the underlayment or flooring on a floating floor. You will need to tape down the underlayment. Buying good underlayment will make the floor quieter for the people on the first floor and make the feel of the floor softer for you. Good luck putting in the floor. I have installed several. Make sure you buy the install tools. They are cheap and will make the installation smoother.
Q: What brand / type of adhesive can we use to glue down the engineered wood flooring on concrete?
its a special glue made for glue down laminates and engineered.. it is made for this project and many brands exist. Now are you aware that a glue down job is not for amateurs or someone with limited skills.. you work in small sections having the pieces cut before hand most of this stuff dries to set in less than 10 minutes..
Q: I am considering engineered flooring of good quality, since you can get better value for exotic wood. the sample i am considering is natural dark wood, which is expensive with solid hardwood. the Aluminum oxide coating with prefinished flooring cannot be applied on site, and makes the wood more resistent.
I think they are equal in adding value. The engineered wood is more practical because it does not warp like all solid wood.
Q: my engineered wood floor is popping up in the hall way, it seems to have expanded, how do i re-secure?
Make sure that there's nothing wrong with your house's beam and support columns. I'm going to guess that the floating floor is popping up from moisture since its a secluded piece. Try to look underneath of that spot in your crawl space or basement to check for water damage from moist pipes or hungry critters. I'm posting a link to different methods to try. Yours hold of course try to identify the cause to prevent it from happening again. Maybe a dehumidifier in that room could be a good idea. Moisture levels should be below 60% (30-50%) to avoid moisture damage
Q: which holds up better engineered hardwood floors or solid hardwood floors when you have large dogs?
Definitely engineered, some are 20 to 25 times harder than hard wood. I got 3 large dogs and they haven't made a mark in 9 months since i installed the floor.
