- Q: I think I burned the speaker coil out of my speakers.In the process of troubleshooting I noticed when my speaker wire from my amp touches + and - it sparked.What if any options do I have for saving the speakers and or amp? Did I wire something wrong?
- The speaker coils can be checked simply by momentarily connecting a 1.5 volt flash light battery across the terminals - the speaker will emit a low volume thud each time the speaker is quickly connected across the battery if it's functioning. The amp, unfortunately, is not so easy to check - if the speakers test OK and the amp doesn't work, it more than likely is defective and needs to be repaired or replaced.

- You may think its not the speakers, but without the correct specs on the speakers as well as your soundcard manufacturer, model number/name, and even computer. It will be difficult to diagnose this problem. Further define what you specifically mean by, bad sound. Describe the sound, is it tiny sounding like a mouse, is it metalic sounding, do the speakers pop-and-hiss, is there a lot of static sounds. Does it sound like the music is far away even though the volume is up maxed and the speakers are well within range. Soundcards and onboard sound systems all have specs that determine the best speaker system to match them with. Perhaps the speakers are not in the range the soundcard can output, or maybe its the other way around and the sound card does not match the preferred input range for the speakers. Buying speakers solely on the big numbers printed on the front of the box as well a hefty price tag is in no way an indicator to their quality. Most common sized desktop speakers that boost anything over 10W (watts) power is not showing you the whole picture. Read the fine print, the big 20-1000W ++ numbers they tend to scream at you are the combined wattage of both and all speakers and the output power but not the actual speakers themselves.

- well, I assume Realtek accepts 5.1 speakers. so, after installing Realtek go to Start Settings Control Panel Sounds and Audio at the Volume Tab there is a section called Speaker Settings, click on Advanced Click on the pull-down menu of Speaker Setup and press 5.1 surround sound Speakers

- id look for more speaker inputs in your headunit. but make sure your old speakers can handle the same wattage and ohms as your new ones. if your headunit doesnt have more speaker outputs then you could also wire your old speakers to the new speakers, but this will make them quieter and i just dont suggest doing it. it could cause damage

- Actually yes you can. Center channel speakers were designed to be low profile and have a large listening angle. If you want to use a bookshelf speaker, you should not turn it on its side(assuming its a standard single woofer-tweeter design) as that would cause breakup nodes along the horizontal listening axis(which is a more important axis because typically not everyone is sitting perfectly in line with the speaker. A bookshelf speaker placed in its normal vertical position will typically not have the large off-axis response that a center channel speaker would. However, it will have a more even frequency response with less areas of cancellation between the multiple woofers. Basically, go ahead and do it, but make sure you leave the bookshelf speaker upright and try to sit as close to inline with the speaker as possible as this will give you the best sound possible.

- When you unplugged your monitor speakers and plugged in your new speakers they should have just started on their own. No switching should be needed. ~ Are they turned on? Some have a switch on the speaker.

- absolutely. The main issue is that the factory installed (usually) speakers needing far less power to drive them and as such you will need to turn it up to reach a similar sound level. be advised you CAN exceed the potential of the stock radio and get horrible sound as the Total harmonic distortion at that power level from the stock radio will cause poor sound. just don't go nuts on a high end set of pioneer speakers and you'll be happy.

- I strongly recommend that you don't do that. Believe it or not, this is akin to taking the lid off the receiver and reconnecting the wires you find inside - not stable, could ruin your system. However, there may be an easier and better solution. Many surround processors have a mode called PARTY (or some such name, check your manual) that sends full frequency stereo to the rear speakers, and often mono to the center speaker. This should be the effect you are looking for, and when you want to go back to watching a movie you can just change the surround mode!
