Q:We just moved in and there is a preexisting garden in the back yard that hasn't been touched in years. I'm going to rip the hole thing out and start fresh. I know nothing about gardening but its been something I've wanted to do for a while. After I get everything out how should I go about replacing the area? (with top soil? fertilizer? Any tips, advice or good websites would be greatly appreciated
Contact your County Agent for region specific information. Your soil will need to be tested for Ph and nutrients through your County Agent's office. A quick, easy fix is to do raised bed gardening.
Q:I'm thinking about planting something in my gardening and my friends tell me that pH is important factor to consider when I'm trying to decide what to plant. What's so important about pH?
Different plants do best in different environments. There are plants that need acidic soil to do well, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, blueberries. Others prefer alkaline soil, such as lavendar, irises. So it depends on what you want to grow. You can get a general idea about the soil in your area by observing the weeds that grow there, but you will have to check a reference guide for this. It is easier to choose plants that will naturally do well in your area than to try to modify the soil drastically. A lot of plants will do well anywhere. Observe the gardens around you and talk with experienced people at your garden center.
Q:My 9 year old girl wants a garden. We live in MN and want a garden that produces things fairly fast. Any suggestions?
Get one of those strawberry hanging planters (the upside down strawberry planters). Get the eversweet strawberries. They will flower very soon. They will have flowers and fruit year round and they will be above ground keeping off slugs and other pests. Radishes are good for planting in the ground from seed, they grow rapidly, and are ready for picking soon. The only negative is that kids usually aren't thrilled about eating them. Tomatoes are beautiful and grow large fairly rapidly. I think everyone should grow a few tomato plants since there is such a huge difference between store bought tomatoes and home grown. THey might take longer to get fruit from, but I think it would be a good lesson to your daughter at an early age about the benefit of home gardening. Also, I think she'd get a kick out of the wonderful smells of the tomato plant.
Q:Hey,I'm looking for some home and gardening creative sites that i can learn about new herbs and stuff that i mostly can eat.
Take a peek at Greenheart Living. The blog was originally started on Wordpress, but recently got included on Facebook. The lady who created the blog talks about gardening, and collects links to related information. Enjoy!
Q:He is currently incarcerated at SCI Camp Hill, PA, awaiting reclassification to a quot;Homequot; facility. Getting him a subscription should wait until he's transferred to whatever facility he is assigned to for the balance of his time to be served.
I don’t know how long your grandson will be there I can only assume longer than one year. If his stay is less than one year would it not be easier to send a locally purchased copy from your post office? I also assume you want to send more than one magazine to your grandson, most magazines can be sent as gifts that will be charged to your credit card! That can be renewed if need be! To wait for his permanent location is a good idea as the magizine subscription needs an address to send to that is not temporary! Your grandson should get his current address upon transfer. If you live close enough to your grandson you can always hand carry the monthly issue on visiting days and give it to him that way!
Q:Have a new house with many plantings front and back yard. Communication with previous owner has been difficult. I would love to find a volunteer who would walk through the garden areas with me to name and label the various species there. I want to weed, but love wildflowers and such, and don't want to take out something of interest. I know I can go to my local university with plant leaves for help with identification, but with so many, it would be a long and tedious process.By the way, my geographic location is northeastern Connecticut. thank you.
Have you thought of contacting your local chapter of Master Gardeners or your local county extensions office I think it would be a great learning tool for all of you (if you were closer I would love to do a walk through since I am a Master Gardener but it is just too far from Connecticut to Montana.) Good Luck!
Q:I have one of these cookbooks, and I think it's a 75th anniversary edition, or something like that. In the retro recipe part, there's a recipe for crepes filled with spinach and four cheeses. Sadly, I've lost the recipe, and I can't find it anywhere. Anyone know where I can find it online? Or, does someone actually have it and could post it on here? I'm dying to make these again, so if you can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!
This is a Better Homes Gardens recipe from the 70's. It only has 3 different cheeses but I hope it is the recipe you are looking for. Baked Appetizer Crepes 12 6-inch crepes 2 beaten eggs 2 cups ricotta cheese 1 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese 1 10-ounce package frozen, chopped spinach, thawed and well drained. 1 1/2 cups soft bread crumbs (3 slices bread) 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 tsp. black pepper dash garlic powder 1/2 cup butter or margarine 1 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese 1. Prepare crepes. In a bowl combine eggs, ricotta, Swiss cheeses and bread crumbs, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, pepper and garlic powder; mix well. Spoon about 1/3 cup filling into center of each crepe. roll up. Cut each rolled crepe crosswise into thirds. Place the pieces, cut side up, in a 2-quart baking dish. 2. In a small saucepan, melt butter, stir in cream and the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens slightly. Pour the sauce over the crepes. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 18 to 20 minutes or until heated through.
