- Q: I was given a 8ft 8 in x 12 ft 2 in persian rug that is in superb condition. It is authentic, but can not find out how much it is worth. I know that it cost 2,000 dollars 30 plus yrs ago, but am clueless on what it would go for these days. Could anyone give me some advice on how to find it's worth. I was given it a couple yrs ago by a family member who had passed away, it was left to me in their will. I dont like the color or style, Im into more modern stuff and I am looking to sell it. Someone please help, I am desperate and dont want to get ripped off, or name the wrong price and come to find out later that its far more pricier that I originally thought.
- have it appraised by an antique dealer.
- Q: I am just wondering in the 30's 40'5 and 50's how they cleaned carpets in there house. I know at some point the vacuum cleaner was invented but for actual carpet cleaning (with a carpet cleaner) how did they clean the carpet. I am not talking about spot cleaning either but all over carpet cleanings. Thankss
- Foam shampoo machines were invented in the 40's. I still use them, I have a few Electrolux dry foam machines. I like better than the hot water extractor machines. Most carpets prior were actually rugs and they took them outside and beat them. I don't know what they used to spot clean a rug. We were too poor to have any. I expect they used soap and water and a brush and towel.
- Q: Do i need to use a carpet stretcher to install carpet. If i don't use one will it still work alright
- The stretcher is a key component. Without the stretcher you could end up with wrinkles in the carpet and the edges may pose a problem.
- Q: what's the difference between an emerlen rug and a wool rug?
- A wool rug is obviously made from wool or a wool. These rugs can either be hand knotted (best quality) or machine tufted. Persian rugs are wool for example. Emerlen is a 100% synthetic Polypropylene. The rugs are air-twisted (woven) and heat set. It's basically a FAKE wool rug.
- Q: I have a rug imported from Iran. It is made of wool on a silk backing. My cat was sick on it and some of the color ran—vermilion into cream color. It is getting a bit dingy and I would like to get it cleaned. Is there any way to get the pinkinsh stain out of the cream part. It is a beautiful rug.
- If the color ran, your rug was probably made with vegetable dyes rather than chemical dyes. Don't try to clean it yourself, you will make it worse! Take it to a cleaner specializing in oriental rugs and talk to the owner, not the counter clerk. It may be dicey, so ensure you use a professional company.
- Q: I have a puppy that is a year old and she still isn't fully potty trained(shes a lot better than she used to be, but still has accidents) plus i have a toddler and normally have many other children here- leaving spills and stains. So for the past year I have used my carpet shampooer A LOT but am now concerned that it may have mold under it or in the padding. my mother keeps telling me they aren't a good thing to use and they will create mold. So I am wondering if it would be moldy and if so how I can get rid of the mold? Thanks!:)
- Carpet shampooers do thoroughly soak your carpet, but they are also designed to pull the liquid quickly back out so it does not remain in the carpet. The cleaning works the same way that the river smooths stones - friction and water. Mold requires a long breeding time, contaminants, and a warm, damp environment. One way to get mold in the carpet is to leave a wet spot for a long time. This could simply mean that the puppy managed to get away with one accident that you didn't see, and when you finally trod across that area, it was already soaked down to the padding and so, never got cleaned up. Another possibility is that your carpet shampooer MIGHT be malfunctioning, and not pulling the water back out fast enough. This would be very easy to determine, as the carpet would be very wet when you finish. If it's damp, but not soaked, then the carpet shampooer is probably not to blame for the problem. There is a possibility that you have another problem, such as a busted pipe or something that could be affecting it. If you can't determine the source, you can pull the carpet off of the tacks, and check to see if you have mold.
- Q: Dining table is in a cellar rec room and table requires 8' x 14' rug ., do they make rugs this size?. Where would be the best place to look?.
- That is not a standard rug size and I doubt you will find one … good luck looking! ;) OR ~ You can go to a carpet store and ask to look at remnants – when you find something you like they can trim it to the size you need and bind it for you – so the edges are nest. It will cost about $2 a liner foot to bind and remnants are inexpensive… so the “custom” rug will cost you maybe $100 – $200 tops - possibly more if you chose high end carpeting…
- Q: If I were to knit a throw rug, what size needles and what type of yarn would work best for the project?
- When I was little, my dad's girlfriend knitted me a throw rug out of left over yarn from other projects. She started in the center and made a circular rug. The needles were quite large, I'm not sure if they were a 15 or not, but most likely they were. I loved it, but it slipped all over the place, so if you do make one, be sure to put some non-slip backing on it.
- Q: I have found white worms in the vacuum cleaner bag they also appear to be heavily infesting my carpet and look alot like snakes. What could this be?
- these little worms that you found are actually maggots they grow all over the place that is not cleaned all the time they will grow on something moist also and what you have to do is basically just clean up the area maybe with carpet cleaner because they might have laid eggs sum where and if that doesn't get rid of em then call the exterminator and tell him U got maggots
