Q:I heard a state legislator today on the radio talking about taxing home gardens that grow vegetables and other produce. This state is in serious economic trouble and they are looking at every possible source of revenue. The legislator stated that many home gardeners sell their produce at flea markets and do not pay any sales tax, that the produce grown even if not sold amounts to income and should be taxed. What do you think if the feasibility and practicality of this?
You know exactly what to do about this State Legislator - organise people to come together - esp those with home grown vegetables and fruit for sale, to vote him/her out of office next time around. But please do always bear in mind the following. Everything is taxable - Benjamin Disraeli - Victorian British Prime Minister. But, in a democracy it's up to the people to elect representative from their own ranks. Failure on their part then results in the sort of quasi fascist nonsense which you have described. In other words, this Legislator is trying to impose a tax on food - result, mass starvation. POWER TO THE PEOPLE
Q:Is this even possible and what kind of plants would I use?
It all depends where home is located. If it is in a cooler are where gardens are planted in April, then you probably can. But if its where the temperatures are warmer, like where I am (Texas), we plant our garden starting after Valentines with turnips and potatoes. In early March we plant cool season crops such as broccoli and in mid-March we plant beans, corm, squash, peppers, etc. Many agricultural colleges have web sites that have loads of information, so you might see if one in your area does. You might try your local Agricultural Extension Office and see what information they may have for gardening. Or you might be able to ask someone in your home area for advice as they might have information on when to plant but may also know what varieties do well there.
Q:We have a big garden, and we often have a few of the neighbours' cats wandering around in it at any one time. My kitten is 10 weeks old and he's had his shot for cat flu, but not for cat AIDS or leukaemia (gets those in a couple of weeks). Is he old enough to be introduced to the garden? And if so, would it be safer to wait until he's vaccinated against AIDS, or doesn't it matter- I can't see how a kitten could get AIDS, to be honest. The vet said there was a lot of cases in our area though. Also, my mum's worried that if we let him out in the garden, the older cats from the local neigbourhood might think he's invading their territory and attack him. Would they do that?I'd like him to be a mostly outdoor cat, as we have a lovely garden but a very small house (and he's trashing it :P) He's very strong and vivacious so I'm not worried about him being afraid of the grass or anything (like my dog is lol)Thanks for your help! :D
I think it should be fine, although it would probably be wise to go out there with him for the first while. Also, if you know the plants you have in your garden, to check online as to which ones might be poisonous to cats. If you're in the clear there, it should be fine with shots just a couple of weeks away, especially if you're hanging out with him there anyways. Hope that helps!

Q:what kind of poisons would be found in remodeling homes in the 1950s that would cause neurologic problems?
Lead is the only toxin that I can think of. It will be found in the paint as well as in the solder joints of the plumbing. Lead damages a particular kind of brain cell which then produces free radicals due to the damage making its mitochondria less efficient and more polluting. These free radicals then kill off nearby motorneurons which result in the kind of disease Michael J. Fox has. Dementia, on the other hand, is caused more by aluminum, which is helped across the blood/brain barrier by fluoride which is itself a potent neurotoxin. Depression and Anxiety are more often caused by hormonal problems. Specifically when certain toxins usurp iodine from the thyroid and force it to make substitute hormones that don't have the same effect, then this can result in mania, depression, and anxiety, but the precise results vary depending on what element is substituted for the iodine as well as the genetic makeup of the individual. While toxins can accumulate slowly over a lifetime, not showing any noticeable symptoms until the body's tolerance is exceeded, more often than not symptoms are not noticed simply because the onset is so gradual due to the slow buildup. The LD50 of a substance is where 50% of the subjects died from exposure to the substance. The first subject may have died from much less. Some people are more susceptible to toxins than others for a variety of reasons. The only assuredly safe dose is zero. Nevertheless, people continue to cook their food in aluminum cookware using fluoridated water and increasing the amount of aluminum in their brain every day. Some people will show symptoms sooner than others.
Q:I am starting a garden this fall with berry bushes and leafy greens. I have been doing a bunch of reasearch because I have never had a garden before and some of my plants are prone to bugs and fungus. I want my garden to be as organic as possible so I don't want chemical spray. Anyone know any good homemade concoctions I can make to help? Thanks =D
I will just name one product: neem. It is good for controlling some fungal diseases and many insects. You can buy it at places like Home Depot. It's usually packaged as a spray with a name that indicates it's uses, not as neem. Just look at the active ingredients, and it should say 70% neem oil. It is approved for organic production. Make sure it is labeled for your crops.
Q:where to go if i needs tips on how to make my outdoor look beautiful
I recommend BellaOnline. There are many different categories for help and information, it is simple to navigate, and if you have any questions you can email the editor or ask it in the forums. It's really great. :)
Q:thinking of starting a vegetable garden in east texas when i move there in a couple weeks. what kinds of veggies would do well in the heat/sun? should I water every day, twice a day? any info much appreciated!
Tomatoes and peppers are a great place to start, not to mention the beginnings of homemade salsa. :) Onions also do well. Just check out what the local Walmart and other home and garden centers have. The won't carry what you can't grow. Yes, water every day, twice if needed.
Q:My neighbor uses hose to send refuse into my garden. What type of borden can I use to protect my garden?
