I typically use a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water (can be made stronger for tougher stains) for carpet stains. Borax and water is another great stain remover. I have successfully used these methods to clean every stain on our carpet.

If all else fails you can use double-sided tape, not duct tape.
