- Q: I refer to the overhung impeller pump. They normally have two bearings supporting the shaft, (and an oil box between the bearings). Why is that? why not only one bearing? what would happen if they are manufactured with one bearing only?
- You could do that but you would have to rely on the bearings of the driver to help support the load. You would also have to be sure one of the two bearings could take an axial thrust load. As you may know there are vertical inline pumps that do just that.

And so Ive always wondered why I dont hear about wheel bearing going out on cars, or why I dont hear about having them serviced...Im assuming they are sealed bearings, but still it seems like they should need serviced every so often. I drive an early 90s ford truck, nothing fancy. Is this something I should consider doing, or should I not worry about it unless they start making noise?Thanks!
- First, check to see if your upper and lower wheel bearings have zerx fittings. If they do not, you cannot service them. Whenever your tires are rotated or serviced have the mechanic check them. He will try to shake the tire by grabbing it on the top and bottom and attempting to move them. If there is play, you need to replace your lower wheel bearings and upper control arms - both sides. If you have zerx fittings, then every oil change the mechanic should grease them. He/She will only put in enough grease to make it come out the boot which replaces worn out grease. No one else in this forum appears to have any idea how to maintenance a car/truck. Also, from the factory most new 4WD trucks do not have zerx as they are planning on their parts wearing out and needing replacement. Upon replacement I recommend a heavier duty ball joint / control arm replacement that is greasable. I just did this to my 07 Silverado 1500 at 125K miles. I live in the country and traverse dirt roads frequently. My indicator that this was needed was tire wear on the inside of my front tires and vibration when driving on the highway. - you can either wash the grease off in a solvent tank and inspect the bearings for pits and discolered ends where the hardened material has worn off (also how much movement in the bearing race itself. Or do what I do on unknown mileage bearings toss them out and buy a good made in USA set. The made in china cheapo bearings are soft core with a hardened shell. And at some point they start to disintegrate and take out all the other bearings too. A good set of bearings are not that expensive and always buy a new grease seal

- I know that there is no way to plasti-gauge the bearings, but do you really want to take that chance? Removal of the old bearings and installing the new ones will take about an hour with the correct tool. Isn't that time well spent to protect your investment? - Well to start, your engine has no camshaft bearings. The reason for the loss of oil pressure is due to the increased clearances between the components. This is symptom is usually more a product of worn crankshaft and or connecting rod bearings. The increased space between the components provides a less resistant path for the oil to be forced through, and therefore resulting pressure is reduced.
