Q: I'm thinking about buying an 87 Fiero for $650 but it needs rod bearings... I wanna know if it's worth it to buy it.: the only thing about that is if the bearings are knocking then the crank might be scared. i believe i would stay clear of that car. something made those bearings go, maybe a bad oil pump.

Q: Are they connected with the main bearings? Are the trust bearings only on the outer portions of the crankshaft?: My 4-cylinder has a total of four thrust bearing parts. They set next to one of the main bearings. There are two upper and two lower pieces so it takes a total of four. Yes they can be a problem as the two lower ones have a tendency to slip out of place and fall into the oil pan as they near the end of their useful life. But most 4-cylinders have a single thrust bearing built into one of the main bearings so they are not separate parts.

Q: i bought some new bearings today, Bones Reds. the guy at the shop said that they were so fast they didn't need an abec. after riding i thought that my old bearings, the rush abec-7's, went faster. i just wanted to know which is faster: Bearings Reds

Q: We just got a 98 cavalier and it makes a sound when we make a right turn. It also make the sound when we drive straight but you can barely here it. We were told by a family member that the bearings probably need greased. How do you do that? DOes it sound like the bearings to you? Thanks: if it is the front wheel bearing the noise / vibration will increase on turning . on most new cars , yours included the front and rear wheel bearings are sealed . the other thing you need to check is the CV jionts , if the bbot has torn allowing water and dirt to get into the jiont it could also be the problem . the sound of a bad bearing is like driving on stone/ gravel road and will be constant with speed , a bad CV jiont will vary with the amount of tourque put on the drive line

Q: i have bones reds bearings and i dont know if there abec 5 or abec 7 tell me what you think?: bones makes many types of bearings. Some are ABEC rated and the better ones are not. The ABEC rating is for vibration in high speed machines that run at speeds similar to skating over 200 mph. They are not the best design for skating but companies make a lot of them for other reasons and it is cheaper to get them than a design that is custom made. Bones, Twin Cam, Zero Drag, and some other companies have custom designs for their better bearings.

Q: I have a 2004 VUE, and the last couple weeks I've been hearing a roaring noise coming from the rear right wheel. It has gotten louder the last day or so. One person told me it might be the bearings, and that it's a easy thing to have fixed. I'm taking it to the mechanic on Friday. Anyone have an idea how much this might cost?: Now here is what you do if you get a shop to do it. Get estimates from everyone. Then go by brake check and get an estimate. Now the trick is is to get on the computer for the brake check in your city, if you have one. They have a calendar there where you can schedule your vehicle for putting in new bearings. If you will notice, on certain days, they have up to 30% on some locations at different times and days. You might call and ask what the percent off covers. Is it parts or labor or both. But seems a good deal. Otherwise, buy a hayes repair manual for about $20 or so. Bearings are one of the few things that are EASY to put in. Now you can go to one of those back yard mechanics who can do it real cheap.

Q: My buddy bearing popped out. I think grease got all over the wheel. How do I clean the wheel and repack the beaing with grease once I put on the new buddy bearing.: Just use old rags to wipe off the old grease. Then reinstall the bearing buddy and put the new grease in by pumping it into the bearing buddy. Don't disassemble the hub bearings unless they have failed and you are going to replace them. If that's the case, prepack them before installing. Check instructions from your parts supplier......I learned to do it by hand from a mechanic 45 years ago. Good Luck!
