- Bleach is a good chemical to put down there like PJ says. If the smell is actually coming from the drain, then maybe your drain systems vent pipe is plugged. It will be a pipe that goes all the way up and out of your roof right above your sink. Have someone climb up there with a garden hose and see if the water goes through up there or if it over flows. If it overflows, then your vent is plugged and needs clearing out. The vent allows the trap in your sink to retain some water in it so that the sewer smell doesn't come back up out of the drain. If the vent is plugged, then the sewer gases will try to vent back out of your drain up into your room.

Follow directions and pour the recommended quantity down the sink drain. It will work it's way down the the stoppage. Let it sit for about 1 hr. I've used it twice with success. I'm saying the sink drain because the stoppage appears to be at the junction of the sink and tub drain with the major stoppage on the sink side.
