- some have a bead of silicone or caulk around the cut out. you have to slip a putty knife under the lip and pry it up. also check for clips first.

They are only on the sink and on the flat surface not the bowl where the water comes out. - I have no what they are, but I managed to get rid of hair dye from my daughter's vanity so you might like to try this. Soak a makeup remover pad with neat bleach and sit it on the spot/s. Leave for a day or so, re dampening as necessary. It took aver 24 hrs, but the dye stain was gone and there was no dicolouration where it had been. Good luck.

- You have no idea if its steam or a chemical reaction somewhere in the pipes. So, in an apt, if I were you, I would do my best to cover the drain so that steam' can't come up. Then I'd cover it more with a lot of blankets etc, and then I would close the door. I wouldn't re-enter until someone told me it was safe. Maybe you didn't use chemicals, but you share the building and the pipes. So someone did something. Or, its nothing. Better safe than sorry. I'd of course make the maintenance guy check it out ASAP. Make them. Someone I know didn't know better and mixed bleach with PineSol. There certainly was a chemical reaction which could have been worse. Call maintenance and make them come out. And if they give you the runaround, tell them the fire dept would be willing to come and bring their detectors to let you know what it is. (I used to live in an apt where the maintenance was overloaded and everything had to WAIT). Good luck.

- Depending on how large it is, it will accumulate hair and debris and could cause the sink to plug up eventually. However, this might not happen for a while. You could attempt to use a piece of wire, bend the end into a hook, and try and fish around down in the drain to pull it out. This can get tedious fast but it has worked for me before. Removing the trap from under the sink (the u-shaped piece of tube at the bottom) should be neither difficult nor too terribly messy. They are designed to come out with a simple pipe wrench. Some even have a small threaded drain the the bottom and you could try and fish it out that way. Once it starts to accumulate gunk and slow the drain you will have to get it out anyway. Better to do it now when it will be relatively simple than later when it could be a massive clog.
