- Q: hi i live in a upstairs flat,and i want to tile my hall with ceramic tiles,i did a square 4 foot patch to see if the tile would stick or would come loose,well they did come loose,so how do i prepare floorboards for tiling over so the grout wont crack when i walk on the floor thanks
- First, I'd recommend making sure that the wood flooring is secure with no loose spots. Then you may need to strip any finish off it in insure good adhesion. Finally, you'll need to make sure you have a good tile cement and use a proper tile trowel to apply the cement. It will put grooves in the cement that will help with adhesion. If you go to Home Depot or Lowes, they can probably give you pointers. They also have classes sometimes, including putting down tile. Good luck.

- Q: I want 12x12 tiles on the floor of the bathroom. But on the countertop (small, less than 6sqt) should I do large tiles, or smaller tiles of a similar style? And for the backsplash, should it be the same as the counter or the floor? Not so good with the design aspect. :)
- All your tile selections should co-ordinate but do not need to match exactly. I like the big tiles on the floor but not on the counters and back splash. The large tile will make those areas seem out of scale. I'd go with a similar tile but in a smaller size on the counter and back splash and see if you can find some accent tile to work into your design of the back splash. All it takes is a band of something like natural stone, glass tile or a textured tile to kick it up a notch and by using the more expensive tile sparingly, you're not increasing your costs but certainly increasing the eye appeal.

- The vinyl tile can be, on occasion put right atop a sub floor. It s not the ideal way but can be done. Best is to a 1/4 inch wood sub floor commonly called luan. Now on to a ceramic. You ll need a 1/2 in cement board Utli -Crete and DUROCK are 2 well known brands. Both need to be thin setted down and nail or screwed w/ a galvanized nail or screw. - Tile is always priced by the s/f and agreeing with another poster 100 s/f is huge, 3 xs the standard back splash. I did my pricing on what was to be installed, tile or a stone product, if there was striping I charged by the linear foot. So you have to many variables to give you a price. - Your best answer will be on the tile boxes or on the bags of thinset. Generally you need a 1' subfloor, 1 1/4 being better. Most tile setters like small grout lines with this type of tile using toothpicks as spacers. Using the latex admix will help with expansion and contraction cracking. Keep the installation area well above freezing before, during and until cured, also do not let it get excessively low in humidity, as this will cause cracking from drying too fast. Always work your way out of an area, to avoid walking on freshly laid tile. Every so often pick up a just laid tile and check for 90%+ coverage of adhesive. Try to avoid getting any thinset on the face of the tile, as it may stain it. Use non sanded grout. If you have any specific questions, email me

- After installing thousands of sq. ft. of tile and remodeling more bathrooms than much else I cant imagine NOT using glazed/fired ceramic...especially in a shower/tub area. The reason is fairly obvious...ceramic/porcelain, is Not strictly porous, and certainly easier to clean. Although my entire bathroom is done in 16 x 16 tile to match the floor, I suggest no larger than 4 x4 or 6 x 6 and/or accomodate any trim type/ decorative tiles you want. I also tile all the way to the ceiling. Steven Wolf Obviously ceramic can be purchased in LOOK LIKE ANYTHING. It need not strictly have a GLOSS, but certainly should be glazed to allow no niches for mold; etc; which you'll have to address regularly in the grout lines anyway.
