- Q:Am I able to Lay down Ceramic/Porcelain Tiles directly on top of vinyl tiles. If So are there special material that I need to use.Even though the floor is in the basement, it seems that the vinyl is laid over wood, rather than concerete. Thanks for your answer.
- The best idea would be to take the time to remove the vinyl tiles. Otherwise the tiles are going to uneven. Pulling up the vinyl tiles shouldn't be too much work and you will be happier with the results in the end.
- Q:So I have the substrate ready, the room is a L shape 253 x 148. Where do I start the tile, I am assuming the center of each on a chalk line. Is this correct?Bond
- Start your whole tile by the wall where the tiles will show when you enter the bathroom. Why make cut all around the room? Its takes longer and you will see more tile cuts. You want to cut tiles where the vanity, toilet, closet will be so they don't show as much. Dry lay some tiles against the wall that will show after everything is installed and make a chalk line against that wall. Spread your thinset mortar evenly and install three floor tiles at a time. Before you continue, install three more in row 2 to make sure the tiles look go to the fit. Then continue the first row. See link below for further details.
- Q:Im going to put tile floors in my home, and working on a budget so i cant spend too much. question is I am undecided regarding the color, i found a brownish color tile kinda like sienna not to dark 16x16 and another beige with cream and is glossy with a design etch on it really nice, but in a 12x12 i think. anyway, i really like the sienna color for the living room, kitchen, foyer and hallway, but i dont think it would look right in the bathroom, i like the beige for the bath. i have a very small bathroom so wold it look weird to have two diffrent tiles in a home? i plan to paint my living room in a grayish blue color french blue i think its called with white trim but still undecided in bathroom i really need some advise on this so if anyone knows please help

- Q:I have tiles around all of my kitchen and would like to cover them. Can I skim plaster over them because it would take weeks to remove them? Is there any other way round avoiding removing them? Any ideas welcome. They are driving me up the wall, literally! HELP.
- Weeks? An hour should be enough to remove a good portion of them as long as you don't want to save them. Take a hammer and smash the tiles. It does work.
- Q:I have some old dark tile in our entry way. It‘s not an option right now to replace it, so I‘d like to make it look better if possible. When I mop it and it looks nice and shiny. Then when it dries it looks dull. Is there any way to make it shiny all the time? Thanks
- You could try to re-seal the tile. Is your tile glazed? Glazed tiles should never need to be sealed, as the glaze is the sealer. Do a water test first to see if your tile is soaking up water. Put a little water on the tile if it turns dark, then your tile needs to be re-sealed. If you just want to make it shiny, you can try a topical sealer. Your local tile/flooring store should be able to help you pick the best one. There is also something called a 'wear layer' which is an acrylic floor finish that helps to keep you from wearing through the sealer. Again, your local tile store can help you with this step.
- Q:I live in a single-level ranch style house but on a concrete pad. I am re-tiling the kitchen floor. Upon removing the old tile, I discovered a 15 lb. felt pad had been glued to the floor; on top of this pad was thin set; then the tile. I live in Bakersfield, CA which is a dry and arrid climate.

- Q:I need to install tiles on the floors of a 500 square foot apartment. I am torn between ceramic tile and vinyl. What is the price differential in terms of materials and labor? In otherwords: in total, how much would I pay to have the entire apartment tiled in ceramic vs. vinyl? Please note I am not a DIY person AT ALL so approximate labor prices are crucial. Thanks!
- vinyl tile would be a lot cheaper..off the top of my head and if the place is empty and the floor that the vinyl tile is going over is in good shape, you are probably looking at around 800 dollars........ceramic maybe 3 to 4 thousand......these figures are far from exact but the vinyl tiles could probably be finished in a day, whereas, the ceramic could take 4 to 5 days in all.........
- Q:The previous owner of my house did not correctly install tile in my bathroom. There is a thick grout line along the bathtub, and when I apply a good amount of pressure on a tile (full bodyweight), I can hear the grout grinding against the tub. I know the right thing to do is replace the tile but I have plenty of other home projects to do before we sell the house. Would it be acceptable to saw out the grout along the tub, refill it with new grout, then caulk? Would this at least fix the grinding noise I hear?
- After installing thousands of square feet of tile and gallons of grout I suggest it isn't the fault of the grout or the tile install, but could well be some flex in the sub floor, and/or what supports it and in fact how that relates to what supports the tub and any conditions arising over time from leaks, etc. I can't judge the install, but you don't state the width of the grout line as it butts the tub, and anything more than 3/8 should have been done with a non sanded grout and certainly in a poly blend. You could create a shim if you wanted, though it might not be aesthetically pleasing and grout to the shim, then caulk to the tub. DOC
- Q:I‘m on a tight budget but some people say tile is better I dont know which is best and will last longer and easy to maintain Any ideas what to do?
- you did not specify, ceramic tile or V.C.T(vinyl composition tile) ?. as a flooring installer the cheapest over all installatin would be the vinyl in both rooms, then the v.c.t., then the ceramic tile . vinyl would be the easiest to care for, most vinyl sheetgoods have a high sheen for a nowax finish just damp mop and your done. spills pool on it instead of finding cracks to seep into like w/ tile. fairly easy to install with minimal materials(vinyl, underlayment, something to fill the cracks between the under layment , i use dry wall mud, and glue). V.C.T. over wood floors cracks within a couple of years and takes work to maintain w / stripping and waxing. ceramic tile you have grout lines to keep clean to maintain an even look to your floor plus in the higher traffic areas the finish gets wore off and dull looking, then you get to have a pro reglaze or replace. plus it can get quite costly to replace broken or chipped ceramic tiles. down the road easiest to replace the vinly. to me money is money and dont care which i install for a customer. but at home i'd go w/ the vinyl.
- Q:I need to put a 4 inch hole in a 16 inch ceramic tile.
