- Q:bathroom sink?
- Many moons ago, this was called an S trap; today, it's called a P trap, not because it traps pee, but, presumably, because it's P-shaped. Anywho, if plumbing went straight to the sewer with nothing in between, you would be forced to endure the entrance of sewer gases from the sewer--smelly and dangerous. So there is the trap under the sink, where a small amount of water stays trapped in the bend of the pipe, and acts as a barrier between the sewer gases and the air from the trapped water to the pipe going toward the sink. Though it can be a nuisance, it is also nice to be able to retrieve a fallen ring by just removing the trap. So you absolutely need this piece of plumbing.
- Q:how do you fix a hole and crack in a Porcelain bathroom sink?
- The hardware stores sell porcelain repair kits w/ instructions. But the best thing to do is replace it.
- Q:how do u clean a bathroom sink ?
- With comet and a wet cloth.
- Q:It's not clogged, I've used drain-o, and it's been this way for several years...it's driving me nuts. I'm a stay at home mom and want to WOW my hubby with my fix-it skills;o) But, I have no idea how to fix it...any ideas?
- If plunging doesn't work, grab the cable auger and go to work under the sink. Remove the sink trap with a pipe wrench. The large, threaded coupling on PVC plastic traps can often be unscrewed by hand. Empty the water from the trap into a bucket then make sure the trap isn't clogged. Remove the horizontal trap arm that protrudes from the stubout in the wall. Feed the cable into the stubout until you feel resistance. Pull out 18 in. of cable, then tighten the lock screw. Crank the handle in a clockwise direction and push forward at the same time to drive the cable farther into the pipe. Pull out another 18 in. of cable and repeat the process until you break through the blockage. If the cable bogs down or catches on something, turn the crank counterclockwise and pull back on the auger.
- Q:what is the best drain cleaner for the bathroom sink?
- Before you resort to a snake try this first. Under the sink the waste lines form a U. This is called a p-trap. You want to disconnect this. The trap is full of water (most likely funky water). Place a small pan or something like that under it so as to catch the water instead of letting it spill all over. You unscrew the fittings to remove it. It will require a pair of channel locks to loosen them, and then you can unscrew them by hand after you've loosened them. You will most likely find hair and assorted build up in the trap itself and in the drain tube that runs from the under side of the sink into the p-trap. This will also most likely be filled with hair etc. too. Clean all the pieces as best you can. It's nasty so be prepared for it. Reconnect everything and run water to see if that has relieved the problem. Make sure you tightened the fittings back adequately. Check for water leaks. If you find any, you will need to tighten the fitting/fittings a little more. You do not crank these fittings as tight as possible, but they must be snug. It's a feel thing. You get it with experience. If it drains fine you're good if not, you'll need to remove all the drain lines and run a snake through the lines to clear debris built up further into the drain lines. I don't recommend any liquid drain cleaners. Most contain a product called lye that can cause the debris to harden.
- Q:serious answers only please without me calling a plumber
- If it's where you can see it, that is not all the way down to the trap try this. Chew up a wad of gum and stick it to the bottom of a pencil or chopstick then push it down there to stick it to the cap and pull it out.
- Q:Toilet wash basin into the water pipe to stay high
- Bathroom wash basin into the water pipe to stay 50CM can, because the faucet above the wash basin comes with the tube.
- Q:What do you think is more appealing? A wooden cabinet with a one piece vanity top for a sink that would double as storage or a pedestal sink made of porcelain and a piece of wooden bathroom furniture that would be the storage unit?
- Pedestal sink! Not only is it easy to keep clean and looks so modern and fresh, it will give your bathroom a special look all on its own. As for storage.... think about what you really need and keep it simple and functional. You have lots of options today with magazine racks, toilet paper pedestal stands, vertical cabinetry that conveniently fits in a corner, back-of-the-door hooks and such to create a functional bathroom without clunky storage. Have fun!
- Q:In my bathroom, I have a ball-joint sink valve. Which means its a single rotating handle. Pushing it up turns it on. To the left, hot water. To the right, cold water. My dilemma is, if I push it all the way to the left, no water comes out. If I rest it in a certain position to the left, it sputters, and eventually cuts off altogether. In other words, its a pain in the butt to get hot water out. Im assuming it needs to be repaired, but could it also be that it is an energy saving faucet? As Im not sure.Anyways, if you are knowledgeable in the area of plumbing, I would greatly appreciate your diagnostic if you have one. Even if it isnt right at all, Id still be grateful for input.
- There is a brass disc inside the tap which moves when you wish to choose hot water or cold water, and blanks off the water you don't need. This disk needs to be taken out and re set.
- Q:My wife lost a necklace down the bathroom sink. I took off the trap (which was quite a pain) and got out the necklace. Now as I am trying to replace the parts I realize I can not replace them because all the parts are rusty and corroded. Is it easy to go get some plastic PVC pipe and replace the trap or should I get a plumber to redo the whole thing from the wall to the sink. I know virtually nothing about plumbing so I don't want to screw up and have water running in the walls and fill my wals with mold, etc.
- I really hate to disagree with a 40 year plumber, but I've changed dozens of these things and far and away, the majority of them were a snap. It's rare that the tailpiece, (the pipe that's actually connected to the bottom of the sink), goes bad, so odds are you're going to need at least the trap portion of the drain line. If you're working inside a vanity, then you really don't have much room, but should be able to remove the pipe that either goes into the wall or straight down into the floor, along with the trap itself. If it goes into the wall, you need a P trap, if it goes to the floor it's called an S trap. Most bath sinks use 1 1/4 pipes for drains, however, sometimes they go into 1 1/2 pipes before they get to the wall or floor. In that case the nut that tightens to the drain line usually has a larger tapered washer included in the set, which you would use at that point. Get PVC, don't use brass. It's much less expensive and will last forever. You can see what happens to brass when exposed to lime and calcium, crud and corrosion. If you're not real sure about your project, take a picture and take it along with you to the hardware store. Show it to one of the employees and they should be able to help you find what you want and even show you how to put it together.
