Q: The previous owner of my home put up walls for separate rooms OVER existing carpet in the basement. He/she did not install baseboard along the new walls. I'm planning on replacing the carpet in the basement as well as installing baseboard along the walls. What should I do first? The carpet installer is going to have to cut the carpet from underneathe the walls in order to replace it. Should I wait until after the new carpet is installed or can I go ahead and put the new baseboard in regardless?: You ll have to cut the carpet out and put the base on. Depending in what carpet you put in , the normal distance to leave the base up it just the thick ness of a normal base. Unless you have thin carpet and thick base use a few pcs of scrape.. Doing this will also stop the tracking and sawdust you ll track in on new carpet putting it in.. A couple of draw backs , but its minor.. Newly painted base, the paint isn t cured and can be easily scratched up from the carpet backing. This is hard not to do because of the backing of most carpets. If they are painted be prepared for some minor touch ups . Even care full installers it can happen.. GL

Q: Someone told me that decorators have a general rule for the size area rug you need for a room. It is something about a certain number of feet of exposed floor around the perimeter of a room. Not sure if there is a way to determine what percentage of a fiber it is other than reading tag that was on carpet at showroom or trusting the business where you purchased the carpets. Also, I read on another page that neither wool or nylon will float when the fibers are put into water.

Process for replacement of faulty carpet; 1) inform the retailer of your carpets fault 2) The retailer will organise a visit by themselves or the manufacturer representative 3) If after a check your carpet is deemed faulty you will be given a form to fill in, put the fault, and your name e.t.c. the retailer or manufacturer representative will fill in the technical details, such as the position of the fault e.t.c. 4)Depending on the extent of the fault, but the representative will normally diagnose whether or not the fault will receive a automatic replacement or whether more testing will be required. 3) Wait up to 3 weeks to receive your replacement carpet; no money will be required from you, the manufacturer will pay for the replacement and fitting.

Carpet comes 12 foot wide so the smallest pc you can get to fit your room is a pc 12x9' 6 Thats 114 s/f and at the low end ( you can still get cheaper) of 3$ a s/f thats 342$,, This won t include rip up and disposal and furniture moving ( which you can do all that yourself) . Going with a black carpet ( which will show ever thing) you will limit your self in selection and black carpet generally runs more since its hard to get a consistent dye on carpet being this dark. Q: I recently dropped a small spot of bleach on cream colored carpet. Is there any way to dye the carpet back? It is a spot about the size of a quarter.: You can dye the carpet back and that is the only way to fix bleach stains. I am not sure where you can buy carpet dye but it is not that hard. Dilute the dye with water in a spray bottle and spray the bleach spot and absorb with rag. Continue until desired colored is reached. It is not always perfect but works. Or you can call a local carpet cleaning company. They can do it and they charged me about 50 bucks too.
