- A keyboard is much better for A first timer. It's a much easier concept to under stand, there are no foot pedals to worry about. When you become more firmiliar, and a better player you can always upgrade to a piano. When you learn how to play the keyboard before the planning it' easier cause you don't have to worry about the footpedals and keys, you just have to worry about footpedals. I've learned! Good luck!

- Yamaha keyboards are good, but don't get a Clavinova; they don't sound like a piano. Kawai is a good brand too. Also you can get real pianos in both brands. I'm not sure what you mean by a cross between a baby grand piano and a keyboard; either it's an electric keyboard, or it's a piano.
