- If you are s street skater, then avoid ceramic bearings. They are designed for longboards, and can;t withstand the shock of landing, especially stairs. ABEC ratings are meaningless for skateboards they don't indicate speed or appropriateness for bearings. So... I;d go with the Swiss bearings. I prefer Pig Swiss, but have had good luck with Bones Swiss and Black Panther Swiss, but the Pigs need less frequent cleaning and maintainance than the Bones or Panthers. If you don;t want to spend the money, go with the Bones Reds, they are a high quality bearing at a great price, made to the same specs as the swiss bearings at 1/3 of the price.

- The 96' has regular taper bearings but it matters when getting the bearing you have to specify if your Ranger has the Dana35 or the Dana28 axle. NOTE: The 00' Ranger does have the Hub assembly style bearings.

- Hi, the front wheel bearings on the golf's are not a tapered type and are very hard to check for freeplay / wear when car is jacked up...I have worked for VW for 30 years and changed many of the front pressed in type bearings....the only sure way of testing which side bearing is noisy is to spin the wheel up to a high speed with car jacked up and feel the bottom of the shock behind the wheel hub were the hub is bolted to it, if the bearing is worn you will feel a grinding sensation through the hub. This can be very dangerous if you are not careful....we used a mobile wheel balancing machine to spin each wheel up while, it was jacked up on one side... I would not try this if I was you with no training...Get a 2nd opinion from your local VW specialist or come and see me if you are in NW UK...

- Through the oil pan, if you have a clear shot. It will take about 2 hours. However, that is not really the best thing to do as you will want to have the crankshaft milled down so that it is perfectly round. Otherwise the bearings will slip again. That will take time at a machine shop and generally cost around $100. Also you will need oversized rods after doing that. Also to do the above you will need to pull the engine out.
