Q: I'm replacing the door speakers in a 2001 Coupe Camaro with the factory sound system. I needed to know which wire was positive and which was negative so I bought a circuit tester. However, I keep getting the reading that both wires are positive. What could be causing this? I know the circuit tester works because I tested it on the battery terminals and it worked fine.: You cannot use a circuit tester on speaker wires. It is not the correct tester. All you have to do is look at factory speaker it's marked positive and negative.

Q: So on my ceiling fan I have a white, black, green, and blue wire. In the ceiling I have a green, white, black, red, and bronze wire. What gets connected to what? Thanks for the help!: Redneck Texan is an idiot. Bronze does not go to blue. I think he is color blind and thinks the green in the picture is blue. Pat F85 is correct. The black on th fan is the blades and the blue on the fan is the lights. Black and red in ceiling can go to either blue or black on fan. Typically it would be black to black aNd red to blue.

Q: I have an old house and am replacing a dimmer switch in the kitchen.The old switch is has only 2 wires coming out of the switch that are both black. From the wall 2 wires connect to the 2 black wires on the switch, one is black which I have concluded is hot and the other is red, which must be the common wire. My question is that there is a 3rd wired that is pushed into the electrical box that is capped and not being used. This wire is white. I can only assume that would be a ground wire, but why would it be white in color. Can you tell me what the coloring scheme was for wiring old houses? You should have them checked before you connect something. Black is hot White Neutral Red wires are also used for hot wires, switch legs (like to a ceiling fan), and are the second hot wire in 220-volt installations. Another useful application is the interconnect wire between two hardwired smoke detectors. A ground would be green or bare.

Q: I have a 1989 Nissan 240sx. Somehow the fan caught a hold of the wiring harness and tore all the wires. any idea how much it's going to cost?: Buying a wiring harness will be prohibitive, and even transplanting one from a wrecking yard can be expensive. The harness can be repaired by splicing in pieces of wire where wire is missing and splicing together damaged pieces of wire. It is tedious but not particularly time consuming - I spliced in a section of harness after an engine fire in about 2 hours, working slowly.

Q: i need an egr wiring Diagram for a 2000 Chevy Malibu. the wires got pulled out of the weather tight connector. if anyone can help i'd appreciate: Connector view for the GM linear EGR valve are as follows: Pin# A=gray/w black wire,Pin# B=solid black wire,Pin# C=brown/w white wire,Pin# D=brown/w white wire(see note) and Pin# E=solid red wire! NOTE since pin C+D have the same color wire the correct wire must be identified by checking the voltage with the KOEO (key on engine off) the right brown/w white wire should have a 5volt reference voltage with the key on engine off! It will have a white, a green or bare for ground, and a black and red for x and y.

Q: The new light has 1 live, 1 neutral 1 earth wire, do i remove the earth connect the reds if so what about the 2 blacks?: No! Wire the new light exactly like the light that you removed. If you don't remember what wire went where on the old light then you made a mistake by removing the old one without marking the wires or at least taking a cell phone picture or something. It sounds like there is probably more than one light fixture being controlled by that switch. It's hard to tell by your description. Electrons don't flow by wire color. There is no way to really tell what is going on by naming colors. Come back on here when you have a better description of what is going on. How many lights come on when you flip that switch? Is there more than one switch that controls that fixture? Which wires were hooked to the old light? Are any of the wires still wire nutted together? Don't be experimenting by hooking that earth ground wire to any other wire. Leave it hooked to the ground lug on the box. It has nothing to do with the light operating. It's for safety.
