Q: i have tiles in my bathroom witch are painted(not me was like that wen i moved in) was wondering if i cud wallpaper or tile over them
you could paint over them again, which would look fine, but I wouldn't tile over them. to start, its not a smooth surface, which means that it will be very very hard to do a good job. Plus at some point, the old tiles will start to lift and fall off, which means it will ruin your new tile job. for what its worth - scraping them off is not a fun job, but its not a hard job and its something you could do yourself which would save money.
Q: The ceramic tile in my kitchen is cracked at a lot of different spots. My guess is the previous owner didn‘t put a thick enough plywood before installing the ceramic tiles. I want to replace them, but I just realized that right now my floor is perfectly leveled with the hallway and living room and adding more plywood would screw it all up. What options do I have to get around this issue?
Tear it up and maybe you can level it without adding more plywood if not replace the plywood too. Or you can tear it up and put some thin plywood down and put a threshold in the doorway that will cover up the height difference.
Q: Is it possible to remove just the top row of the ceramic tile on my bathroom walls without damaging the remaining tile? I‘d like to replace the top row with glass tiles for a more updated look.
they make bits for dremel tools that'll take the grout out from between the tiles however you'll probably have to replace everything so the funnest way to do it is to get yourself a hammer and just start breaking the tiles one at a time since you'll have to replace everything. however don't use a 3lb sledge hammer i wouldn't even recommend using a 16oz ball peen hammer. best to use a carpenter hammer and a chisel.
Q: We are laying 18 x 18 porcelain tiles in our kitchen for an open house we‘re having in 6 days. We can‘t figure out when and how to tile under the refrigerator. Do we have to move the refrigerator into another room? Can we wait two days for the mortar and grout to set firm and move the refrigerator onto the newly installed tile so we can lay tile where refrigerator will go? If we do that, should we then wait 24 hours for that tile to set so we can move the refrigerator back into place? What is the best way to handle the installation? I would appreciate any thoughts on how this is most ideally done.
Your refrigerator should have an adjustment at the front, just lower your frige push back at the top of frige, and put some blocking back far enough so you can set your tile. Make sure the tile is far enough under the frige. Lay your tile, and grout. Then push back the frige, remove the blocks, and adjust your wheels as needed.
Q: Behind my sink in the kitchen, I have a back splash that is white tile with an ugly floral pattern on about every other tile. Instead of replacing all the tile, I was thinking maybe I could somehow take off the floral stuff.I don‘t think it is like a sticker, I tried scrubbing it off with a magic eraser with no luck. Any ideas?
okay first question, do you own this place, if the answer is no, then there is nothing you can do to change these tiles without the owners permission. if you do own this place, then odds are the only way to change the tile pattern is by changing the tiles
Q: I have a 15x15 tile that is on the floor in front of a gas fireplace (never been used) that has a hairline crack in it. The tile is one of 4 on the floor and matches 8 others that ring the face of the gas fireplace, the bathrooms and the kitchen. I cannot find the same tile to replace it. There is no elevation difference across the crack. Is there a method to fill the hairline crack so it doesn‘t stand out like a sore thumb?
Try adding some dye to grout to match the color. You will still know the crack is there but nobody else will! You can also use silicone but its harder to work with and doesnt last as long. You may want to experiment with the color by mixing a couple different colors to see which one is the best. Get the dye from a masonry or tile supply house. It is meant for grout. Have fun, Dan
Q: Hello Everyone, I have been given option by my builder for option amongst vitrified, Indian and Italian tiles? Should it be separate for living/bed/room and kitchen. Only serious replies please. Thanks
I ve worked with tiles for over 20 years and I find no difference in tiles from different areas such a Italian , Indian .USA, Brazil, China etc. They all have excellent and garbage tiles. The vitrified tiles is a type of tile as is ceramic and porcelains. Usually a bit harder bodied and the the sizing is better on vitrified tiles. Get what coloring and style fits your needs. You have any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
Q: My mothers house has 9 tiles on her bathroom floor and I understand they are made with asbestos. Some of the tiles are starting to lift and I am concerned about how to remove and dispose of them, any suggestions?
I would not advise you do it yourself. If you really need to DIY. soak the tiles and dont break them and you can hire a special type of skip i think. Experts are the best for this job, expensive but not as expensive as your life!!
Q: The hammer took a chip out of one tile, the chip is about the size of a pencil eraser. I‘m just heartbroken as we just had this tile installed 12 days ago! Is there any way to fix this- short of replacing the tile? I‘ve already bought a rug that will cover the hole but I‘d still like to fix it if I can. Just in case we ever would like to go without a rug. Thank you!!!
short of replacing the tile, you might try super gluing the chip back into the tile. but thats about all you can do.
Q: can you tile an old brick fireplacegt;?would it look stupid?
To do that it is a bit more complicated than it sounds. You would need to make the brick surface smooth, no crevaces. It's expensive time consuming. Consider resurfacing the fireplace
