Q: My wife sent me to pick up some used floor tile. It still has the stuff (plaster? grout? whatever?) on the back of the tile. Can this be reused? Do I have to get the old stuff off? It is on there pretty uniformly.
You could use this again if you want. The biggest thing is the thinset mortar on the backs and grout on the edges. If the mortar on the back is uniform, there's not much problem, but it will add to the overall height of the floor. You will also need to pay attention when re-installing to keep your top surface uniform (flat so that you don't have raised or low corners). As for grout on the sides, it can be removed painstakingly using some ceramic tile nippers. If there's a lot on the surface of the tile, it may be hard to get it cleaned effectively so that all looks good. Bottom line, you can reuse it. However, there could be a lot of labor involved in getting it ready for installing it. Unless it was really special, I'd look for something new - especially if you're going to install it in a large area.
Q: Can you have tile insalled in your kitchen w/o using grout in between tiles? Or, can you space the tiles very close together so there is very little grout? I just keep hearing about how hard it is to clean grout.
You can have the grout lines small but the trick is to seal the grout a week after you install it. You can reseal the grout a few times a year to keep it up. Also, business is slow right now so you might want to consider granite. There are a lot of granite, tile and marble people looking for jobs. Not, Lowes or Home Depot -Call around to some granite marble places and get referrals. I had granite put in 2 years ago and absolutely love it!!!
Q: should i put tile in my kitchen if im gonna put wood floors in rest of my house ? or should i put the wood floors all through out ?? does it look ok with tile and wood transition ??
Hi, In a survey of real estate agents they said that homes with hardwood sold for more and faster. I think it is a matter of personal preference as to what you use. I think any tasteful quality product helps the resale of your home. I personally have hardwood in my kitchen and love it. I also have tile in my bathrooms and entryway and love tile there. The tile stands up to all the water in a bathroom and all the dirt in the mudroom that gets dragged in. The tile in the entryway comes right up to to tile in the kitchen and looks great. I personally do not want tile in my kitchen as it is not very forgiving when something is dropped. I spend a lot of time on my feet in the kitchen and find tile to be a hard surface on your back and legs. Both have a long life but hardwood is more susceptible to damage. It can be sanded and refinished but it is costly. Hardwood you do need to wipe up spills right away and should have an area rug by your sink especially if you have kids that do dishes like mine water all over. I have had my hardwood for over 12 years and it still looks great. Hope this helps.
Q: The tile in our master bathroom is really ugly, but my husband likes the acual tiles themselves. The house was built in 1978 and the colors show bigtime. My question is this; can I paint the tiles a different color or am I just stuck with really ugly tiles until get a ton of money? If I were able to, how would I do this? Thanks in advance!
lady, wait till u get a ton of money, i really think that painting over ceramic tile will work, it will only ware off, now u might invistigate on a paint espeacailly for tile, and that is also costly.... another idea, get a equity loan, if u are able too. ok hope i helped u a little.
Q: HiIs there an adhesive that can be used to spot repair Vinylfloor tiles 18x18 on a basment floor?
Lowes or Home depot has all this stuff in their tile section. I seen it when I bought the adhesive for the hardwood floor I put in. Good Luck!
Q: I got thisAmerican Florim tile about a year ago and can‘t remember if was Terra cotta tile. Does it look like it to you? If so it is 320 square ft of Terra cotta 18 tile. 5 or so tiles are broken on the corners.
You should talk to the distributor. They are the experts on their brand just check out the american florim website. Then you should be able to find one of their show rooms.
Q: I want to remove my carpet in the bedroom. I know about pulling it up and all that but what I don‘t know is what the next step is after it‘s totally up. I want to put down tile I‘m not sure if I want to put down ceramic or just the plain old sticky tile. my question is can i put tile down directly on the floor boards. I don‘t think that there is hardwood underneath i just see like plywood or whatever that board is called. Is there anything specific that needs to be done to the floor before tiling?
if you put down ceramic use the cementboard first if you put the peel and stick, i always use wallpaper primer first let it dry and then laymy lines and then put the peel and stick down the wall paper primer keeps the tiles from moving after time walking on them
Q: Ok the room is 12X16 thats 192 square foot right? well each box of tile is 30 square foot how many boxes would i need
192/32 =6.4 You'll probably have to buy seven boxes, but you'll use less than 6 1/2.
Q: can I surface over my white tile flooring granet??
If they are vinyl tiles stuck to the subfloor and you put another substrate, such as 1/2 cement board, yes you can. If the vinyl tiles are over another type subfloor, such as luan, then no, the vinyl and its substrate must come up and then the proper subflooring put down over the subfloor, correctly and then tile. If its a self stick tile, over slab, it must come up. If its a glued down vinyl tile over slab and bonded well, there are proper ways to put ceramic over this. If your doing ceramic over ceramic, and the ceramic is down well and no signs of cracks or loose tiles, again there are proper ways of putting ceramic ( or granite) over ceramic. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and heck my qualifications there. GL
Q: I recently bought a home with old fashioned pink and blue tile, is there an inexpensive way to make it look better? Help.....
Surprisingly, if you go to Lowes or Home Depot and look in the tile section, it really isn't that expensive to put down new tile. There is a tool to remove the grout from the old tile so that you can pry the old tile up. After that, the installation isn't difficult. I would go that route as opposed to trying to doctor old tile. Good luck!
